Generally Maaco does cheap nasty paint jobs…how good do you want it to look? Have you considered the cammo look; the DIY spray can job? Is price a major consideration?
FWIW, if I’m buying a used car, I reject immediately ones with bad paint jobs & body work. I’d rather have the original faded paint than a crappy job.
A Corolla looks best with a Flame Job.
A Flame Job I tell ya.
Well first you need to get a good roller…
I had 1-Day Paint and Body (similar to Maaco) paint a car I used to have. It was actually a fairly decent job, except I changed the colour and they don’t paint much inside. Some time after the new paint job I put some camera tape on the door just inside of the window. 1-Day didn’t sand anything inside so the paint came off with the tape. If you’re keeping the same colour, 1-Day does an adequate job. But just adequate. If you’re going to keep the car for a while and want it to look good, go to a “real” body shop. Look at other cars they’ve painted to see if it’s good enough for you. You’ll pay more, but if you’re keeping the car you want it to look good. If you’re selling the car, don’t bother with painting it. It won’t add enough value to cover the cost. Or get a cheap paint job from Maaco.
I sold a 1977 MGB to a guy from The Netherlands. He liked the faded original paint, saying, “I like to buy cars with the original paint. Americans don’t know how to paint cars.” Well, Americans do know how to paint cars; but if you want a “factory finish” you’re going to pay for it.
This thread piqued my interest-I have a 1997 SATURN SC2, that I would like to repaint. The problem: the nose/front end has lots on nicks and scratches, from being sandblasted on the highways (the MASS DPW likes to spread lots of sand on the roads). because the SATURN has plastic body panels, rust is not a problem. However, when I wax my car, the wax residue leaves littl white spots where the pits are-very unsightly. Can I just have a paintshop sand off the clearcoat and respray another layer 9of clearcoat)? And, if I were to change colors-what would a new paint job run me? Third: is MAACO really that bad?
<Simpsons> Gonna paint my wagon, gonna paint it fine. Gonna use an oil-based paint, 'cause the wood is pine! Ponderoooooooosa pine! Wooo-oooh </Simpsons>
