Painted Musical Instruments / Safety

I just recieved as a gift a very cheap Dizi, or Chinese flute (somewhat similar to a Chinese equivalent of the tin/pennywhistle), whihc came in a slender, form-fitting plastic bag. It smells very strongly of lacquer/paint or something of the sort (it’s painted dark red and is shiny), and I was wondering if there’s any caution to be had. I’m letting it air out in my room so it at least will stop smelling. I’ve blown it a few times. I’m just curious if there’s anything I should be worried about in terms of putting my mouth on something that smells so of fresh lacquer or paint. I don’t want to pass out here.
