Palin confuses First Amendment protections

Back to the OP for just a moment:

Palin and her ilk seem to believe that the 1st amendment allows anyone (or at least anyone who agrees with them) to say anything without criticism or action from anyone. Some blogger or editorial writer doesn’t like what I said, and has the nerve to say so? Violation of my 1st amendment rights! Heaven forfend that anyone should take (voluntary, non-governmental) actions against me because they don’t like what I said – that’s not only a violation of my 1st amendment rights but is a violent attack on those rights (and maybe we should be allowed to shoot them).

I don’t know which is more scary, the possibility that they believe this is true (but only for them, of course) or the possibility that they are saying it cynically just to stir up the witless masses. In her case, it’s really hard to tell.
