I don’t think it does bother them. The institution of Taliban-America actually appeals to a lot of them. Provided, of course, that corporates get free reign to do anything they fucking well like. Oh, and that they have a supply of cheap labour. Chris Rock suggested that without a minimum wage there pricks wouldn’t even pay people in actual money. He may have been on to something
The hell of it is, before he made this pick, I had already decided that a McCain victory wouldn’t be that bad. Now it scares the crap out of me. I would literally rather have another 8 years of Bush than 1 year of Palin.
Not to mention that she didn’t say “what’s the Bush doctrine?,” she said “which part of the Bush doctrine?”. I didn’t know it had different sections either. And neither did Gibson.
Oh yes…
No, I’m not stupid, but I happen to live here and I saw how all of these spun WAY out of truth reports really went down at a local level.
The police called. Your high school English teacher just hanged herself.
You fucking piece of slime. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are losing their homes because of the fuckup of the past 8 years, and you want to continue it because the lefties might get in. Unemployment is up, the wages of most of America have stagnated, but that’s fine with you because the lefties shouldn’t get in. Bush heard of an al Qaeda threat, and went chopping wood, and 9/11 happened, and that’s okay with you because it is better than the lefties getting in. Bush invaded Iraq on a lie, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died, our reputation is in the trash, and, oh yeah, 4,000 of our best are dead and many more are horribly wounded, and it’s okay with you because the lefties didn’t get in.
As far as changing minds. I worked for the Conservative party in NY in 1966 and 1968. I rode in a soundtruck down the Humphrey parade route in NY the Sunday before election day, helping spread FUD to the hated Democrats. I didn’t vote for a Democratic candidate for president until 2000 (I voted for Nixon in 1972). But I figured out sometime in that period that the facts showed that Democrats knew how to run the economy better than Republicans. I gave data in the GD thread showing crime declined under Clinton and is steady under Bush. I looked at the facts and changed my mind, and finally, with great reluctance, changed my party registration too.
Trying to convince someone to vote for a candidate by raising fears of the opposition is not a good strategy. I can think of one case where it turned out pretty badly, can you?
Or to put it more kindly, someone who has an ounce of political sense. Even W wouldn’t rant about “ridding the world of islamic extremists”, because he’s intelligent enough to know this would offend by association the many moderate Muslim voters in the States. That kind of thing plays in Wasilla, maybe, but it doesn’t play in the big time.
She embodies the the exaltation of rural and small-town America, which means that the wholesome goodness of this salt-of-the-earth moose-shootin’ governor of a tiny state is good enough for the VP slot. At least as good as those who attended name brand universities, went to law school, and got elected to the Senate by the age of 30.
Why the hell does Palin talk like that? Is that the normal Alaskan accent? She sounds like she’s from Minnesota or something. But it definitely sounds Midwestern more than it does like the people I know from the Pacific Northwest.
Anyway care to elaborate?
We do it to annoy everyone in the lower 48. Seriously, we don’t have accents. She does have a rather high pitched voice which might be part of the reason she sounds as if she does have an accent. She grew up in Wasilla, so as far as I know, she didn’t come by her “accent” from out of state. Perhaps her parents are from there.
I don’t know, go listen to some of the talk shows on the web, and listen to the callers, we all sound pretty much the same. No real accent, at least that I know.
elucidator Yes, because not parsing a sentence perfectly is absolute proof of stupidity. Poor planning and proofing of my post? Yes, I’ll admit defeat on that one. Sometimes my enthusiasm trumps my writing abilities.
I’m sorry this is way off-topic, but why would talk of islamic extremists offend moderate muslims? Don’t they want to rid their own religion and culture of these psychos as well?
Merk,
You’ve got an actual Palin supporting Alaskan (going on 40 year resident) here in your midst, and the question you ask, after calling us “fucking stupid” is what’s up with that accent?
Oh, stick it up your ass, you pompous, self-righteous windbag. There is scarcely a word of truth in that entire screed, and you are a fucking idiot!
I’m not gonna bother debunking the multiplicity of erroneous, biased and stupid claims you just made, because it’s been done time after time around here by me and others and it does absolutely no good.
Instead I’ll point out that people in this country can and do have a variety of opinions and reasons for voting the way they do, and many absolutely do not agree with your screed on these issues and that’s perfectly fine. That’s the way things are supposed to work in this country.
I am fed up to here with you pompous, self-righteous dipshits presuming that you have all the answers and that the only correct way to view things is your way.
This country was founded on the premise that people are free to have their own opinions and to vote as they see fit. It was not founded on the premise that if one is attacked by intolerent, hate-filled impassioned left-wing do-gooders that one should by all means accept that they are the ones who know what they’re talking about and one should vote that way. For most of my life, the people I have known have been very good about respecting the rights of others to formulate their own opinions, as I have been, and continue to be myself.
The panic, desperation and hatred evident on this board since the Palin nomination is something to behold, and I’ve begun to notice signs that this type of behavior is spreading throughout the country.
I hope so. Because if there’s one thing that is practically guaranteed to make people vote the other way, it’s it’s to be told how to vote or be called an asshole, a bigot, a murderer, etc., if they don’t.
I recall Dick Gephardt once saying that politics is a substitute for violence. I thought at the time that he was being overly dramatic, but the way that you bozos on this board are acting lately, and especially since the nomination of Palin, I can certainly see the truth in that statement.
As I said in the thread I opened on the same subject, you assholes are so utterly convinced that you alone know how people should think, act and behave, that anyone who doesn’t see things the way you do can only be that way because they are despicable assholes by their very nature.
You and everyone like you who is spouting this rigid, hateful, intolerent bullshit are hopefully going to get your comeuppance big time in about six weeks, and when that happens you should know that the majority of people in this country think you’re just as full of shit as I do.
Get a fucking grip and grow up and learn that people not only can and do think for themselves, they have every right to do so.
See you at the polls, asshole!
Nice. Be interesting to see if you get a reply. I’ve seen SDMBers writing that she’s a demonstrable liar, a gun-nut, a right-wing Christian nutjob, etc but I’d be interested to hear your take.
Wow…well said!
And Voyager’s notion that “hundreds of thousands of Americans are losing their homes (sic) due to this last eight years of the administration…” is laughable, in an *I wish hundreds of thousands of Americans weren’t losing their homes *kind of way.
Do people honestly blame shit like that on the President, no matter whom it is? Really?
Well said? To a Starving for Attention post? You are not a half-wit. You are a fuck-wit.
I proclaimed his post “well-said” because the basic premise of it is correct: there’s an absurd amount of pomposity amongst some of the more liberal minded posters here, a fact I find ironic in that it is in direct opposition to the message of unity their POTUS heir-apparent conveys.
Keep slinging those insults, though. They truly reflect on your level of intellect, as well as your inability to control yourself.
The premise that I should behave in a certain way because Obama does (or conversely that if I don’t behave in a certain way, it calls Obama into question) is logical only in the most limited of minds. I don’t for a moment think that we need any sort of unity. I think the Democrats have in fact been united behind giving Bush and the Republicans everything that they want for too long. That’s why you see 80% of the people saying that the country is on the wrong track and extremely low approval ratings for both the president and the congress.
As for pompous, you’re referring to the person who has for the last several weeks been selling one message - that America pre-1960 was utopia, and it was shredded by the liberals who insisted both upon justice for all and sex, drugs and violent rap music. In fact, I can’t think of a better example of a “pompous, self-righteous dipshits presuming that [he has] all the answers and that the only correct way to view things is [his] way” than Starving for Attention.
You keep saying that, but it presumes that someone cannot be intelligent, possess self-control and also insult people. It’s really not a well-supported position to take, you ignorant fuck.
Man, that’s some funny shit. No wonder Alaskans voted her in.
‘People around here don’t have any accent that I’ve ever noticed, and I’d know because I’ve lived here for forty years! It’s people EVERYWHERE ELSE that have accents!’
Hi-larious
-Joe
I still don’t think he’ll last until the election. I think something will ‘happen’ that prevents him from actually running and we’ll see an Obama/Clinton ticket sometime before mid October.
Now re: the OP,
It could be, just maybe, that people have given their consideration and decided to follow the McCain ticket based on what they think will be best for them, just as those who follow Obama do. The ancillary bullshit like ‘troopergate’ and all of Palin’s family shit means nothing. Her record speaks for itself. Not well, mind you, but it speaks for itself.
I don’t think anybody was supposed to get their jollies from it…it just was seen as more effective and humane than shooting them from planes.
No she didn’t. She said, “in what regard, Charlie?” She was tryng to bullshit her way through and fish for an answer. She then took a wild guess that it was Bush’s “worldview.” She clearly had never heard the words before.
I did, but this a silly defense anyway. It isn’t ok for a VP candidate to be ignorant of something just because lots of voters are. I don’t want a potential POTUS who knows less than I do.
