All the conspiracy theories stated require silence in exchange for her abdication, now that she’s quitting does anyone here believe we’ll just never know?
Since I think there is no way this wont come out one way or the other I find it hard to believe, ‘hurried’ as her speech was, that she quit to get away with anything.
cricetus, does one have to renew their renewing commitment to quit the discussion?
This is true. Palin is a hero to the 22% and no one else. She gets the religious right and the cranky old southern white men fired up, but that is far from enough. A lot of Republican and Independant women can’t stand her. They see through her winks and smiles and see the crap for what it is - she’s a undeserving woman getting a pass because of her looks and demeanor.
I know quite a few Republican women who voted for Obama beacuse of Palin.
Philadelphia Flyers fans did. “Boo! Boo!”
Considering who you are asking, I assume it’s that we finally have the break that the McCain campaign has been looking for.
All signs point to future Republican domination. Even the bad ones.

John McCain said, “Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno.” This joke was made when Clinton was president, and Chelsea was still a kid. Care to retract your characterization?
Some people, on both sides of the political fence, take shots at their opponent’s children. It’s not right, unless the child is a grown up and a public figure in his or her own right. Thus, IMO Bristol is fair game, Piper is not. Palin, more than most politicians, put her children in the media spotlight, so while it’s not OK, the kids’ high visibility makes them more likely targets.
I don’t think that’s why she quit, though.
Hm. I’ll vote for forthcoming scandal.
If she was resigning for positive reasons—whether to make a run for the big chair or simply make a bigger difference" as Alaska’s champion outside the govenor’s office—there would have been more fanfare, more excitement, a well prepared, inspiring speech and she would have milked the moment. It would not have been rambling or rushed, it would have been calculated and verging on joyous with lots of “We can make a bigger difference! Rah-rah for me!” and flag waving.
Suggesting her young daughter is pregnant is ridiculous and unfair. And from a more coldhearted, cynical point of view: if her daughter was pregnant, you can guarantee she’d been hidden away from photographers at all costs and not present for the press conference.
Is there any possibility that she might be telling the truth, as stupid as it sounds? That she has found that defending the ethics issues and dealing with the demands of the national limelight have made her ineffective as a Governor (yeah, I know, she would be ineffective anyway, but this is from her POV) and rather than do an ineffectual job at that while her limited mental powers are actually more focused on “bigger things”, that Alaska would be better served by handing off to someone who can actually focus on the job at hand.
Of course then she is also free of blame for the disaster that Alaska’s economy is turning into as oil revenues dial down (almost twice as big of a projected deficit per capita as California’s).
She may honestly not know if her “bigger things” will be a Presidential run, milking the celebritihood for all the cash she can squeeze it for while the squeezin’s good, working for other candidates, or whatever … but she knows both that she is bigger than Alaska and that she cannot at the same time govern Alaska, deal with its substantial coming budget crisis, deal with the mud that she has had to deal with and the additional that will yet come, and move into those mist enshrouded bigger thing lands just over the horizon, all at the same time.
She may honestly see herself as doing a noble thing by taking her baggage off of the Alaskan governor’s desk. Crazy as that thought may be she is self-serving enough to sell herself on it.
I’ve gone back and carefully read her speech. It’s now clear to me that she intends to help OJ find the real killers.
You have golf courses in Alaska?
Yup, sheer Palin craziness is looking more and more like the best explanation as the hours pass. If Osama bin Laden can be crazy and still take out the world trade centers, why can’t Sarah Palin be crazy and still be the Republican candidate for VP?
It’s hardly even a conundrum; shit like this does happen.
I know. I saw him do it, and it changed my perception of him to the point that I stopped listening to his program. What I didn’t do was cheer and point and laugh and make excuses about how her parents were in politics so what do you expect…which is how many posters on this board have been behaving since Palin became the vice-presidential candidate.
But that’s pretty much beside the point. I was referring to 27-year-old Chelsea having been brought out to evangelize for her mother during last year’s election and how the Clintons tried to keep her off limits to the press, and the outrage that occurred when someone accused the Clintons of ‘pimping’ Chelsea to help Hillary’s campaign. I don’t recall any condemnation around here with regard to the Clintons using her to help their campaign, and I don’t recall comments to the effect that she was fair game because the Clintons were ‘shoving’ her into the spotlight.
Nothing specific. I was just an impression. She seemed to me to be upbeat, happy and excited rather than someone disgustedly and unhappily resigning so as to avoid legal difficulties.
Nothing that hasn’t already been tossed out around here. I’m thinking a touring spokeswoman and rabble-rouser, talk-show host, pundit, etc., and maybe with a highly lucrative paycheck.
Why on Earth would you think a retraction is called for? I didn’t say no one from the right ever made an insulting comment about Chelsea.
The issue is that people around here cheer and laugh and make excuses when it comes to insulting and bedeviling the children of Republican candidates, but get in high dudgeon when it comes to a Democrat’s kids. (And btw, I don’t recall much in the way of cheering or excuses coming from righties when Limbaugh and McCain made their jokes about Chelsea (with McCain’s made in private and off the record, IIRC) such as has been going on around her with regard to Palin and her children. Do you?)
Something Awful is a lot harsher message board and someone pointed out that the 8-year old kid looked pregnant pretty soon after the press conference. It’s pretty mean spirited.
I think it’s the upcoming ethics scandal combined with a nervous breakdown. Either that, or she’s a crack whore turning tricks for Vladimir Putin. Her speech patterns were abnormal and off the hook.
I just can’t buy the RNC chair idea. The GOP is doing everything it can to run away from George W. Bush, and Palin is just a female Bush without quite the intellectual rigor. She talks a good game about fiscal conservativism and limited government, but so does damn near every other Republican.
Personally, I’m torn on whether I want to see her there or not. I think she’d be a total disaster as party chair, pushing the GOP further into irrelevance, which wouldn’t be such a bad thing. But at the same time, I’d rather not live in a world where she’s regarded as anything but a joke.
I guess I’m not sure I see this happening. Could you offer cites of people on this message board “cheering and laughing” about underage children (not grown children, of which Bristol is one) being mocked? Some might be saying that Letterman’s comment was about Bristol, not Willow, but not cheering for mockery of Willow or Piper. I see a lot of people in this thread saying it’s wrong. I would think most people of all political persuasions think it’s wrong.
I wasn’t a member here when Clinton was president, nor when McCain made his comment, so I can’t answer for what was going on here. I can say, there was a MASSIVE public outcry in the media about Letterman’s comment, allegedly about Willow. I don’t recall an outcry of a similar volume when a similarly aged Chelsea was mocked, nor any public apologies, though I could be wrong.
The only person going crazy about the “pimping” comment was Hillary herself. At that point, I believe she was completely done for and the news that Chelsea went on what was more or less a date with a young superdelegate was totally deserving of mockery.
It’s just a shame that Hillary had a brainfart and forgot that Chelsea is no longer 13 years old.
One or two: but Alaska is the destination for many, many felons around the country, who feel that they can get lost up there. Problem is, the cops are pretty good, and criminals almost always act up again after they arrive and get caught. With OJ in jail now, he’ll certainly appreciate the help from Sarah, as I’m sure Alaska was his next destination. For searching, I mean.
I got a feelilng, Starv, that if an asteroid slammed into the Earth, you would be down here pointing out how much its about liberal/lefty/Dem hypocrisy.
That, and how asteroid strikes were much more polite and civil in the 50s,
