I can’t get my head around this; Palm is set to release the Treo 700w - a Treo mobile phone/PDA, but running the Windows Mobile OS.
I don’t get it; I mean, I can understand the demand for the device - until recently, there’s been nothing quite like the Treo on the market for the WinCE user base (although this has quite recently changed and there are now a number of equivalent devices), but isn’t PalmOne cutting its own throat here? Does this signify the death knell for PalmOS?
Seriouisly, though, it’s probably a good idea. Like WIndows vs. Apple, there are people whop rpefer one or the other. Gonig beyond that, there are some who merely prefer the hardware or the software of one, and which they could use the hardware of the other. This device from Palm fills that same nich in the Windows CE vs Palm crowd. Many people out there might like some of the offernings that Palm puts out, but sespises the Palm OS (people like me, for example.)
Now, all I need to do is scrounge up a spare $800 for when it gets released…
IMO the Palm OS+ Palm Device market is is slowly being destroyed for Palm. At the high end The WinCe machines are generally more powerful dollar for dollar and integrate much better with Windows MS Suite apps. At the lower end (where Palm is strongest) the basics market is being gobbled up by PDA cellphones.
Palm sees the writing on the wall. I think eventually they will morph into an OS only company, their hardware upgrades have been pretty laggardly over the last few years, and they’ve been playing “catch up” to the WinCE devices.
