Pan Am games, and shameless bragging.

My kid was the leading scorer for the United States vs Peru in volleyball today. they play mexico on ESPN2 tomorrow night at 7 pm central time. She is #10 if anyone is interested.

That’s fantastic! Congratulations to her (and you!)

Awesome! Congratulations! How does one get on the team?

Thanks,

She was a first team all american and all big ten in college. Shes been training with the national team all year. The national team makes the roster.

That’s cool! Good luck to her!

One of my husband’s coworkers is on (one of? Are there different divisions/boats? I don’t even know…) the Sailing teams for Canada. Her first race is today. I hope she does well!

Awesome! go Canada!

Congrats! What position does she play?

I played quite a bit for my college club team. We had an Olympic alternate on the team, and trained with a few people who were actively trying out for the team. High level international play is just…amazing. I miss those days…and the joints that used to let me do that stuff.

Congratulations!

She is the middle blocker, #10. They played most of the bench tonight against Mexico, so she wasnt on the floor as much. She was effective when she was in though.

I hear ya about the joints. I’ve had a knee replaced and just waiting for the other one to be shot enough to replace. I’m in a boot now waiting for a joint fusion to heal. Its pretty nice being pain-free though.

w00000t! Congrats

wow - very cool!

Middle is sooo much fun. I played middle on the B team…which was fun, because I’m 5’8 - pretty short for a guy at any position, much less middle. I just happen to have a really good vertical leap…and I was quick. I remember lining up against a 6’5 guy against…Georgia Tech, maybe? First play of the game, they ran a quick set to him, and I roofed it. His teammates started laughing. Fun times.

And sadly(?) I haven’t broken down enough to have any surgical solutions. Pain-free, you say? Let me go find a hammer…maybe I can speed things along for myself.
In any case…enjoy watching. It’s such a great game - so fluid, if you know what to watch for.

That is awesome!

I LOOOOOOOOVED volleyball when I played. The problem is when you are 5’3, playing the net is not going to happen and I couldn’t set to save my life. But, man, I could dig.

First… congrats!!! You have every reason to be extremely proud.

However, I believe your answer may be just a wee bit abbreviated. Something tells me she didn’t just show up at a Big Ten school and decide at that point to play Volleyball.

I’ve got three kids who play travel sports… two at a national level, the other at the top regionally. My oldest committed to play D1 soccer her Sophomore year of HS. I don’t want to hijack your thread so I may start a new one because I’d love to compare your (and others) experiences in raising a kid who plays at a high level… the time, the travel, the expense, the drama, the excitement, the pros, the cons, etc.

Again, congrats and that is really cool to see everything pay off like that.

Oh yeah… I thought you were dead. (sorry, one of my favorite movies and I can’t help but think that every time I see your user name.)

Yeah, I have 3 girls that all play. My oldest played basketball and switched to volleyball at 15. She’s 6’2 and had a natural talent for the sport. All three of my kids have played club at Northern Lights. My youngest started at the age of 11. My oldest committed to the U of Minnesota when she was a Soph. in HS. My middle kid plays D2, and my youngest is a Soph in HS now.

My oldest is going to be playing in Japan as soon as she is done with the Pan Am games…That is unless she makes the olympic roster, but those chances are remote. She is shooting for Rio in 2016.
Edit to add that they are playing Cuba in the Semi-finals tomorrow at 3:00 central time on ESPN2.

The replay is on espn2 at 7.

I would be interested in a thread like this - I have 2 'Tween kids who both play multiple sports, but none at a more than local Division level. I can’t imagine the investment required - on a number of levels - to support a child’s larger sports ambitions…

Awesome! Congratulations!!!

Yep, Thats my girl.

I know my parents spent a fortune on hockey from 2nd grade through HS. Then, much to their chagrin, I played football and destroyed my knees. We traveled everywhere from International Falls, through Wisconsin and Michigan.

Club volleyball is 5k a year per kid, plus travelling to up to 3 national qualifiers. Practice is 3 nights a week about 20 miles from home. Its a big investment, and one I’m willing to make as long as my kids are passionate about competing. The free-ride at Minnesota took the sting away a bit.

Ah well, they lost in 4 sets. They played really tough though considering it was Cuba’s olympic team against the USA rookies. Hope they can grab a bronze tomorrow.
