Lemon and sugar, here.
Depends on what I feel like doing.
Either syrup of some kind (maple or saskatoon), berries and whipped cream or jelly.
I’ll have pancakes, but not until later tonight as I’m going out for the evening. I remember as a kid that we’d have a pancake lunch (or breakfast) at school on this day.
This is the first year I ever heard of Pancake day. There was a link on Fark about it.
When I eat pancakes, I put syrup on them.
Easter is on March 23 this year, which is about as early as it can be. Wikipedia says March 22 is the earliest possible date for Easter, which hasn’t happened since 1818 and won’t happen again until 2285.
It’s right after Purim, so it seems early to me, too.
You’ve heard of Mardi Gras though? Same thing, only with a bit more exuberance.
Is the batter itself sweet, too?
By the way American dopers, pancakes are not as common in Ireland/Britain as they are in the United States. You can make them any time you want, you can buy crepes etc in places but they don’t seem to be eaten here as often except on Pancake Tuesday when we stuff ourselves to the gills with them.
Not usually - just eggs, flour, milk, a pinch of salt. The sweet things are added later.
No. The batter is just eggs, milk and flour.
ETA: Curse you Mangetout! I was boss-dodging and posting!
Golden syrup, lemon juice and sugar - yum!!
We are making pancakes on camping stoves tonight with our Cub Pack - I expect utter carnage!
Hope you’ve done all your risk assessments. Salmonella from undercooked eggs, burns, lacerations from nasty sharp egg shells - all these things need an action plan in place.
I’m more likely to need to redecorate the ceiling and walls of the kitchen.
With a fork.
Oh sorry, I have just scarfed down 3 blueberry pancakes swimming in maple syrup.
::I’ll prolly have another couple later::
Yes, I’m a greedy bugger, sue me
Here in Central PA it’s fausnaught or donut day. Now that is a tradition I can get behind.
American here. I eat them with maple syrup and butter. Sometimes they will be topped with strawberry topping or peanut butter and honey.
I have never heard of pancake day.
I had to look up what golden syrup is - kind of like corn syrup I guess.
Do you not have a lot of maple syrup across the pond there? Not many maple trees in Brittan?
I’ve also never heard of lemon/orange juice with sugar as a topping.
We in the UK are bereft of home grown maple syrup
We rely on our Canadian cousins for regular supplies., and bloody expensive it is at that
Incidentally, golden syrup is, IMO, utter shite, gimme maple anytime and I mean the real stuff not that fucking godawful ersatz-unfit-to give- to-a-leprous-dog garbage.
Sugar, jam and vanilla icecream.
We’ll have them with ‘pancake’ syrup, golden syrup, and saskatoon berry syrup.
A dab of butter and a flood of real maple syrup.
And now I’m really, really hungry. Curses.
