PARADIGM SHIFT?

I am feeling very strage-could it be the dreaded paradigm shift? How does one know if a PS is coming on-anybody out there have one recently?

Move your chair.

Shake your groove thing, shake your groove thing (yeah yeah). Show us how you do it Babe!

Re: Dobalina

The carrots are nervous and the peas are tense.

Seriously, guys. What is a paradigm shift? I’ve heard this term several times before, and I still don’t have a good idea what it means.

“I had a feeling that in Hell there would be mushrooms.” -The Secret of Monkey Island

A paradigm shift is a major change to a model, resulting in most, if not all, of the original model being discarded in favor of a new one. They don’t happen often, even though the phrase seems to have become a buzzword for any change.

Discovering that our sun is really just another star is not a paradigm shift–discovering that our planet revolves around the sun instead of vice-versa is.

Unless someone has more to add, I guess that about covers it.

One question: when experiencing a PS, is it wise to induce vomiting?

Buddy, can you…

Aw, the hell with it.

You’re SO close (but no see-gar)

Supposedly the line came from an old black and white movie about the China Clipper (“China Clipper calling Alameda!”)

Mr. Dobalina. Mr. Bob Dobalina.
“It is of my opinion that the people are intending.”

A paradigm is a system, a way of looking at things, a model for explaining something. If we get a new model and eliminate the old, we’ve shifted paradigms.

The phrase “paradigm shift” was actually popularized by the movie Jurassic Park in which a man who acted nothing like a mathemetician but claimed to be one said that the world would have to go through a “paradigm shift”. This was, of course, because he believed that Chaos Theory was everything, whoop-bang, the cat’s meow.

Hold it here. Just a darned minute.

“…a man who acted nothing like a mathemetician but claimed to be one…”

All mathematicians are exactly like that, right down to the leather jackets, boots and pants.

How come no one mentioned this is this that thread (oops) about neckties?

Oh, I’m gonna keep using these #%@&* codes 'til I get 'em right.

To see a shift coming, don’t you first have to define the paradigm? Yes, I know it’s an overriding set of rules that govern all doings under it’s blanket reach - but in business, paradigms seem to shift all the time whereas in natural science, there’s much less movement.

I also think the word is way overused. Paradigm implies a great umbrella set of rules. Now the term is being used in small pie slices of an area - again, like business.
Thus I ask…is it really a paradign shift or just a new way of doing something?

There are three kinds of people: Those who can count and those who can’t.

Must…fight off…pair o’ dimes joke. Arrrgh.

A truly revolutionary paradigm shift is certainly in the works and it all boils down to this: red is the new black.

Hope this comes in time for your Christmas shopping.

Peace.

An MBA loser to the rescue:

First, let me dispell the rumor that ‘paradigm shift’ only existed post-Jurassic Park. I’d certainly heard the term before that. I do, however, agree that it is overused and 99% is used out of context

As was previously suggested, a paradigm shift is a major change to a model or process which has a fairly defined process. E-commerce is usually where you see this. While most companies still have buyers/ procurement departments and human resources departments, the Web allows any user in the company to do most of the work these people previously did through very specialized systems. You eliminate these people (and believe me, I’d LOVE to eliminate these people) and eliminate the middle man. You get faster results, and you no longer have the problem of people mistranslating english to english. Same thing in consumer products. Buy direct from the manufacturer or distributor and you don’t need the old brick and mortar stores which mark up the price and add another layer of overhead/ profit.

How much of a process/ business model change technically qualifies as a ‘paradigm shift’, is of course subjective. Being a business person myself, I must admit that everytime someone find a new way to wipe their ass that uses one less square of toilet paper, the word ‘paradigm shift’ starts getting thrown around. I’m pretty guilty of overusing it too.

The term “paradigm shift” refers, as has already been explained, to a radical change in the underlying belief system of a society. Even if we stretch the point by looking at the buisiness world alone, the last event that could reasonably be called a paradigm shift would be the publication of The Wealth of Nations (to the extent that this could be said to mark the begining os capitalism). Capitalism is a paradigm, and any buisiness model, no matter how creative or radical, aimed at eventually and in some way making money for somebody is a function of that paradigm. If a paradigm shift ever occurs in the world of business, it will be when capitalism, in any form, is widely rejected, and businesses are no longer interested in making money, and not before.

PS–Even after his explanation, I still don’t get the name Bob Dobalina or the response to it. Is this some song I don’t know? What the hell are you people going on about??
