Considering that I only saw half the nominees, my choice would have been Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood.
My actual expectation had been that 1917, which I have not yet seen, would win.

I ranked this movie third of my favorites of 2019. In what is probably an all-time first, all three of them were actually nominated for Best Picture (the other two being Marriage Story and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). Cinematically it is masterful. I did have a couple problems with the plot, which I will get to in a moment.
For sure. They were not only using up very expensive liquor but breaking bottles. What was their plan? Were they really going to use their hard-won gains to replace that stuff?
There are certainly poor families that are as dysfunctional and shortsighted as to do something that foolish when given such an opportunity. But they would not be the same families who would be able to pull off this operation to begin with. That is a fundamental paradox of this movie: people who are that dirt poor generally do not have the wherewithal to be so competent; and people who are so smart and competent are rarely going to be that poor on into middle age (I’m not saying there aren’t very smart people in the working class, but why couldn’t the father and mother get chauffeur or housekeeper-level jobs previously?) At least not in the US: maybe it’s different in South Korea.
They refused to provide further details including whether they had determined Lee killed himself. But South Korean media outlets including Yonhap news agency said that Lee’s family earlier Wednesday reported to police that he left home after leaving a message similar to a suicide note.
Man that is sad. I liked Lee Sun–Kyun’s breadth of roles and he has such a lovely family. I thought his drug allegations were overblown too but that’s from perspective of my locale here.
…my favourite role of his was in My Mister. Beautiful show. Beautiful music. Beautiful performance. I’m quietly devastated.
From the show:
Grown Ups
Dear Moon
…just watched one of my favourite scenes, these words meant so much to me at the time. RIP Lee Sun–Kyun.
The issue being that sensationalist media coverage was a significant factor in his suicide.
Police have denied that they were negligent or that they indulged in unusual maneuvers that exposed Lee to scrutiny. But speakers on Friday were highly critical of police procedures.
“His three police appearances, from the simple reagent test to the negative test, were broadcast live to the media. Recordings of his incriminating statements were released to the media and public, and he made the tragic choice to end his life after a third 19-hour police summons,” said Bong.
I thought it was a ridiculous movie, and didn’t sit through till the end. I failed to see anything entertaining. The characters were ridiculous as was the ‘plot’, for lack of a better word. I’m glad others found something to enjoy, but def not my cup of tea.
