Parents prayed over daughter instead of bringing her to a doctor.

What are kids screened for at routine examines? I know my kids always had to give urine samples.

That was my thought, too. I always have a fasting glucose level done with any bloodwork, too - a fasting glucose is a fairly routine tests in Canadian labs, too. Right up there with a CBC (red and white cell count, platelet count and hemoglobin level).

Quite likely, especially since one of those was for symptoms including tiredness (wait, that was one of the times they took my urine…).

My point was mainly that the specific test wasn’t standard procedure, in my experience.

Far as I can tell, they get weighed, measured, checked for being able to balance per the Denver scale. Eyes and ears looked in. Tummy palapated. Shots given if necessary. At eight and nine I don’t think either of my kids has had blood drawn or a urinalysis done as part of a routine screening - I know they’ve drawn blood on my son for a TB screening - but that wasn’t routine. Then a general discussion about concerns, development “is the house safe” “do you smoke in your home”

Mine are eight and nine and as I said, overdue. Its possible that now that they are more capable of peeing in a cup they will have them do so. I’m thinking that getting a urine sample from a five year old might not have a great success rate.

But since faith healing has pretty much a 0% success rate, I’ll go with modern medicine.

Actually faith healing has a pretty decent success rate with many perceived medical problems. Placebos are remarkably effective, at least in the short term. I don’t know that they’ve ever been tested with diabetes though – I doubt it, as the odds of killing the test subjects are probably too high.

How about… young girl killed by angry God as punishment for her parents’ faithlessness?

You never know, he might have been praying diligently and faithfully, but to the wrong god.

This is a repudiation of religion. If such committed believers as these failed with praying ,nobody is there to listen.

When DT stated:

I replied:

Let me clarify.

I, as a believer in God, do not deny reality. I accept reality for what it is, and I may ask God for a change in it, through prayer with the hope that it will be answered. However, I would seek medical attention if it was my kid because in my reality, that would seem to be a prudent decision. I would also pray for the medical attention my child would receive be the right medical attention and very timely in the hope of full recovery.

Of course, everyone’s reality is unique from one another. Therefore, DT doesn’t even have a clue about about the reality of the Neumann’s, nor my reality, nor Nancarrow’s reality…just DT’s own reality. To say that “Faith is the denial of reality” is nonsensical beyond DT’s own perceived boundaries, and to make a blanket statement such as that to extend into other people’s boundaries as if it were some universal law is egocentric at best. Some may agree with his doctrine, but that is far from being universal.

No, of course not. God has a Master Plan that may include you having to die, for reasons not obvious to you or the ones who love you, but trust in God, there is a Reason for a Higher and Greater Good and it is being Fulfilled and You Cannot Stop It, only Appreciate And Participate In It With Capital Letters.

I do hope the HgBA1C’s are only being drawn on known diabetics. It is not an appropriate test to use to screen for diabetes. If it is normal, it does NOT rule out diabetes.

Sadly, too many practitioners have decided to use it as a screen, despite plenty of publicity not to do that.

As to the OP, I’m not willing to pass judgement on the severity of their neglect yet. I do agree it was inappropriate to not have regular check-ups for 8 years! But it is possible to develop acute type I diabetes quite rapidly, and enter life-threatening keto-acidosis in a very, very short time. Not that common, but I’ve seen it happen.

Dude, do you EVER have anything new to add, other than “blah blah blah religion sucks blah blah blah you’re all stupid and evil blah blah blah?”
If not, please go away. We GET it. You think religion is evil. We know. If that’s all you have to say, then shut up. It’s nothing new.

Back to the OP: Apparently, the parents weren’t aware that hospitals usually have chapels. It’s not like they couldn’t pray for her AND get her help.

UPDATE: See new developments here .

Well, sho 'nuff. They prayed over the phone with this goofball while she was dying(website) :

Not crazy at all, no siree bob.

That is an insane statement. Reality is reality. There is no “my” reality and “your” reality.

When the defenders of religion stop pushing their side, I’ll consider it. But from the very first post we got the “faith is good” line and other attempts to pretend that religion is a good thing, and shouldn’t be blamed. If I, or someone doesn’t offend the poor, put upon believers, this thread and others like it would be nothing but religious excuse-fests where the believers tell each other that this sort of thing doesn’t reflect badly on religion at all.

If I sound like I’m repeating myself, it’s because the nonsense from the other side doesn’t change either.

Which of course flies in the face of modern sociology. My reality is when I flip a swtich on the wall, a light should come on. Someone livign in the middle of the sahel region of Africa doesn’t have those switches (most likely) thus their reality is different than mine.

Not that I have a dog in this fight, but the religious were immediately attacked. Their counter attack was pretty much to be expected. And the usual method of attack (such as your own personal favorite) of personal attacks and insults tends to provoke extreme reactions.

And then there’s talk of making it ‘Defender of Faith’ even though it would still be Fidei defensor…

 That’s a rather pathetic attempt to explain away the fundamental insanity of Yeticus Rex’s statement. You are speaking of location, not reality. If I go to that same location in Africa, you know what ? There won’t be any light switches there for me, either.

Right from the OP, they started trying to pre-emptively shift the blame. The ‘counter attack’ started before there WAS an attack.

Here’s the direct link to the press release by the ministry that their coffee shop ministry is sponsored by. It’s called Unleavened Bread Ministeries, and they are an end times group. That indicates to me that there will be no reasoning with them, and that the Neumanns will reform their views.

If you follow the link, you’ll see that there is a distressed smiley – : o) – in the press release. Who the hell puts smilies in a press release?

Here are some bits that I found rather distressing. Bolding is mine.

Oh, hey, I wonder why that is? Maybe because prayer is not a proven means of medical treatment?

Does anyone else think that this is saying that she wanted to die? No 11-year-old should have to make that choice, which is why it’s up to her parents to get her the medical care she deserves, not suffer from her parents’ lack of discretion.

Like fuck. If you want to practice your little apocalyptic woo-woo, then I get to practice my agnosticism, however one goes about doing that.

I realize that Der Trihs has engaged in what appears to be a habit of his, but I have to say that the people in this situation are clearly nutbars. And I don’t feel that by saying that I’m insulting any person of faith who tempers that faith with logic.

Some people here (and I am looking at you, Whynot) really need to pay more attention to this (quoted before, but not obviously taken in by some):

They recognised it was a serious situation the day before and did nothing. They should be charged with manslaughter.
