Parting the truth: Historicity of Story of Joseph (Genesis)

I saw the Bibles Series on TV, and the Joseph story in particular, with Ben Kingsley. Nice entertainment, but Wackipedia says that bible ‘critics’ think the whole thing is a 5th c. BC literary invention; the name given to Joseph by Pharoah isn’t any recognizable Egyptian name.

But I couldn’t find anything more about how historically accurate the story is; what is the STRAIGHT DOPE on Jacob’s favorite son?

Given that the Hittites used to be derided as a Biblical wackadoodle bogey man, I wouldn’t put all my stock in the name of Joseph having to have survived in other contexts. Caiphus was in much doubt, and he was High Priest of a culture that puts immense value on historical remembrance (Jews), even compared to the Egyptians.
