Paul Bunyan - Environmentalist?

My 2-year-old has gotten into a major Barney phase. And one of the videos he loves so much has Barney narrating the story of Paul Bunyan. May ears perked up when he said:

“And for every tree he cut down, he planted a new one in its place.”

I never heard that bit, but I’m hardly an expert on American folklore. So, is that part of the original legend? Or did Barney tack it on to make the story “politically correct”?

All of the Paul Bunyan stories are tall tales. Someone has taken the liberty of adding to the legend. That’s part of the tradition. It’s nice that someone decided to add responsibiity to his character.
