Paul Hill, anti-abortion terrorist, scheduled to die in a few hours

Me, too. I should have put Bricker, not Miller in my previous post. In this instance, killing Hill is only giving him what he wants.

Sums it up for me.

It’s just really sad.

Sad that Paul Hill was so deluded to believe that he was carrying out God’s will when he shot those people, and will be rewarded in heaven for his crimes.

Sad that the state also feels justified in murdering in the name of a higher morality.

Sad that his execution is likely to rouse the madness of more homicidal anti-abortionists who will AGAIN claim the righteousness of their deeds in support of God/Hill.

When will this circle of craziness ever end?

The state doesn’t “murder” in the name of “a higher morality”. The state executes,] it does not murder. Murder is by definition an *unlawful[/i killing, which an execution after trial is not. To compare the machinery of the state, after multiple appeals and with lawful authority, to the actions of a man who walks up to another man on the street and shoots him in the head with a shotgun – well, I think it’s ridiculous.

I realize many people do not agree with the death penalty – heck, I’m not so much for it myself, mostly because I don’t think it’s fairly applied. But execution != murder.

Beyond that, I can’t weep for this guy. I did find a quote from him in the New York Times article that I found very telling – something to the effect that he knew he couldn’t let himself think about it before he did it, because if he thought about it, he wouldn’t do it.

Is it just me, or is that generally a red flag? If you have to have your brain in neutral to do something, what are the chances it’s going to be the right thing to do? Beyond that, his comment about being instantly in the presence of God reminded me of the Onion article after 9/11 – something to the effect “Terrorists, Promised Virgins In Paradise, Express Surprise To Be Roasting In Hell.”

Is he dead yet? I am sorry, but I firmly believe that some people do such terrible things that they forfeit their membership card in our little club.

Yeah, he’s dead.

Yep - was gone about 6pm EST.

A no-win situation: execute him and he’s a martyr; imprison him for life and he’s a hero because he would have “gotten away with it”.
I wish I coulda been there as he breathed his last breath, standing over him, dressed in a red devil suit and pitchfork screaming, “Come to daddy, boy. We gonna have a gooooooodddd time. That voice you heard when you pulled the trigger? That wasn’t God, it was me. BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!”

Rot in hell, maggot.

Out of idle curiosity, what religion do y’all claim to follow?
On a more terrestial note: A very disturbing trend

On retrospect, I should have said “facilitate many more abortions for those women who want them.” I hope nobody thought I meant abortions for women who don’t want 'em.

What I fear is that some people might think that this guy’s actions and execution were worth it because they somehow cause there to be at least 3 less abortions; in which case the death of the doc and the murderer led to a gain of +1 “life”. If there are a lot more abortions in spite of this guy’s actions, then it’s harder to paint him as a martyr.

I’ll second that sentiment - I am 110% certain he won’t be receiving a “great reward in Heaven.” What a psycho.

Actually, until news of his impending execution hit the airwaves, I hadn’t heard anything about Hill in years. He’d been largely forgotten. I think the best punishment for these deluded crusader-types is to be ignored for long periods. Life imprisonment seems like the perfect sentence.

I would normally agree with you on that point - but this guy stated that he had no remorse whatsoever, invited others to replicate his crime, and is entirely too smug and happy about his execution.

Hey, Paul? You want it? You got it.

What? You haven’t received your great reward yet? Oh, so sorry, Heaven must have just mixed up your records somehow. Just hang in there, and so sorry about the flames.

I took it as a pun on holy/holey, not referring to how Kelly died, but to how he (like Hill) killed his victims, i.e., filling them with holes.

Was there a religion check-in point that I missed? I respect your opinion, Monty, but you can’t walk in my (female) shoes. I do understand your concern at the “wishing death upon someone” posts, but the man is already dead. As is his victim.

Actually, it’s the perfect way to have sex. Not to DECIDE to have sex, I grant you, but once the decision has been made, the other nerve ending should just tell the brain to shut up.

Back to the topic:

Every child has the right to be chosen; every person has the right to repentance and redemption, either civil or religious.

However.

The man refused his appeals; he did not suck up to the authorities by pretending a remorse he did not feel; he didn’t pull any punches in his interview; he had the strength of his convictions.

I would like us to face THAT; we may abhor his actions, but he stood by them to the death.

That’s, well, that’s really fucking scary, but it isn’t trivial.

I don’t mind answering you, Monty. I’m an agnostic. Raised Congregationalist, have no beef with Christians (or people of other faiths) who live according to the ethical/moral tenets of their religions but don’t try to force them on other people. I said what I said because I simply don’t know whether there’s a God waiting for Paul Hill; but if there is a God, one I’d find worthy of worship, then Hill is in Hell. And rightfully so.

I’m of the same faith as EddyTeddyFreddy, although I was raised as a Fundamentalist Christian.

Paul’s execution evokes strong feelings among many, since we’re talking about not only the death penalty but a woman’s right to choose. I generally don’t venture into such controversial topics, but this one I’ll debate to the death.
ETF - Yikes! I need a donut.

Sorry, Blonde – I just ate the last one. I’ve got some Hershey’s Kisses – will they do?

I’m for the death penalty in theory, but not in practice. In practice, innocent people will inevitably be executed, and the poor and outcast of society will be more likely to fry than those with wealth and power.

Someone like Hill, though…

Oh, bullshit. I hope you’re not suggesting that there’s something laudable about the way he stuck to his beliefs this whole time.

He’s a classic psychopath, pure and simple. There are thousands like him, remorseless murderers and terrorists and even child molesters. And while this particular psycho made a bit of noise before the system put him down, his delusional mentality is about as trivial as it gets. He’s nothing special.

And he’s not even that fucking scary, not really.
