Cigar box guitars typically only have 3 or 4 strings, but are referred to as “guitars.” You can find a ton of info from a quick Google - websites with cool projects that folks have hand made; places that sell them; kits, etc. I just got a cheapie kit for one to build with my son over the holidays…
Yeah, I tried to read the Wikipedia page on cigar-box guitars: blocked. Reason: Alcohol and Tobacco.
I thought the music was cool, but the lyrics were typical senior-citizen Paul rhyme down with town, rhyme fun with sun, rhyme slack with back junk. But I guess that happens in a jam, and he didn’t rewrite the lyrics.
It was a cool jam - I wish Paul had just kept his mouth shut, or just not made it rhyme or something.
And speaking of Billy Joel - I’ve never liked or disliked his stuff, but his voice has held up well. Tired (a bit) in the second or third song, but strong at the beginning and again at the end.
I liked the look on Sir Paul’s face after they were done. It was like “Yeah, I’m Paul McCartney and I just got Nirvana back together. What?”
Oy. Try this: http://www.cbgitty.com/
(“cbgitty” = cigar box guitar) - they supply parts, kits and ready-mades…
Thanks.
And it’s going to get even bigger now.
I must admit, I quite liked that jam.
It turns out the song wasn’t as last-minute as some of the participants suggested on Wednesday. McCartney and the three Nirvana guys actually jammed and recorded it together about six months ago for a documentary Dave Grohl is making. I assume the song came together fairly spontaneously but they didn’t just whip it together during Wednesday’s soundcheck or something. Regardless, I enjoyed it and I thought it was very cool to see the remaining members of Nirvana play together.
