And who can forget Newman’s sudden appearance in the studio audience at David Letterman’s first CBS show, bellowing, “Where the hell are the singing cats?!?”
(For the humor impaired, it was a reference to the Broadway production “CATS”, which was playing just down the street from Letterman’s new home at the Ed Sullivan Theatre.)
