Pay Equality in Tennis

I am all for equal pay for equal work. There was an article in sports illustrated this month:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/inside_game/magazine/life_of_reilly/

He is basically complaining about how woman get paid less money if they win a championship than men do for the exact same tournament. He also argues that most people find Womans tennis more interesting. I have tremendous problems with both of these statements.

He finds Womans tennis more interesting for the simple fact that he has more fellow americans in the womans draw than the men, fine, I am patritic as well. Just don’t put it under the ruse of it being more interesting Tennis. I can imagine that Spanish people find Men’s more interesting because there is a buttload of Spaniards (and good ones) in the Mens draw, and more so than in the womans. Aussies have the same problem, more good men than woman. Americans have more good woman than men. It’s just how it goes. He simply can’t however provide an opinion that clearly covers one country and say that it applies to the entire world.

He talks about Ace and Towel tennis on the mens side. Have you SEEN Patrick Rafter, Guga and Andre Agassi play? They all play from the baseline. TONS OF RALLY’s. Of course guys like Ivanisavic, Dent, Sampras, and Phillipousis play serve and volley. YOu can’t expect the rallys to be very long.

The same goes for the woman, you have the Williams sisters playing serve and volley (for the most part), and Hingis playing from the baseline. Woman dont generally hit as hard so more WILL play from the baseline and not put as much emphasis on the serve.

To close on that question, whether womans or more intersting than mens, it depends on who’s playing. I personally love serving and vollying. Especially if one type is playing the other, you get the incredible passing shots combined with precision serves travelling faster than sports cars. That’s just my opinion, and no more or less relevant than his (Reilly’s).
As far as woman getting paid less then men…THEY PLAY LESS THAN MEN. They play best 2 out of 3 sets whereas men play best 3 out of 5. I think it’s assanine to think that woman can’t handle the extra two sets but that is how it’s set up, and until they petition to play as much, they can’t expect to be PAID as much.

Say you have a part-time worker and a FUll time worker. The part-time worker does an exceptional job, at least as good as the Full time worker. You simply can’t expect the Part time worker to get paid more or even as much as the full time worker.

I suppose I should have sworn more to make this a quality rant but I really don’t dislike Reilly, just got annoyed by this particular column. (and I know my grammer stinks)

The question that I don’t know the answer to, but which seems pertinent, is:

If the answer is yes, then I don’t think it’s a problem with the money, but with the tournament design (although trying to change it would elicit such howls). If women get paid less in those tournaments as well, then I think there’s a problem.

As for the women’s side being more interesting, I think that’s more reflective of just a few short years ago–with Agassi down and out, Rafter not even a big name yet, and men’s tennis really was floundering. Now it has picked up, which is great.

That’s a valid question that I don’t know the answer to to be honest…If men get paid more in these tournaments then it’s I can understand the outrage.

I don’t pay much attention to the smaller tournaments but I am under the impression that the vast majority of them are either mens tournaments or womans tournaments not both, in which case it’s impossible to put forth a policy that dictates equal pay (golf’s problem) because they are sponored by different companies and with different amounts of money. One can only assume that the tournament promoters assign a percantage to be put towards the purse.

An interesting tournament to look at would be the Tennis Masters series events. I think most of these are for both men and woman. I know they all play three sets.

So, to paraphrase the column, you’d really rather see Ishtar than Casablanca?

Upon furthur research…

-tennis masters series’ purse is substantially greater for men and woman, even though they play the same amount.
-Ericson open…same deal

I don’t agree with either of these, but…

My opinion still stands however for the major championships (until they are required to play the same amount of games)

Tennis is only slightly less boring than golf. These guys are overpaid as it is. I don’t see why they should get more than about $10 an hour or so.

Maybe its because more people watch mens tennis than womens? I don’t see anyone complaining that NBA players make over ten times what WNBA players do, because they bring in lots more cash. Before anyone jumps down my throat i don’t know if more people watch mens tennis than womens, im just guessing that could be the reason.

Here’s my lame solution. Dissolve men and women’s tennis and just make it coed.

In sports, as with many things in life, it’s not about how much you play or how many hours you put into your craft; it’s about how good you are.

A really bad or even mediocre tennis player may practice twice as much as, play in more tournaments, and stay longer on the courts than a great one, but so what? Who’s gonna want to see him play?

When women athletes start beating men, then they will have a legitimate gripe about any pay gap.

In the end, I suppose players should probably get paid for their entertainment value, cuz that’s all it is…

My advice to anyone, male or female, who feels they are underpaid for hitting balls back and forth–or any other sports endevour, for that matter–is to practice saying:

and then shut the hell up.

Except that that is, in fact, false. At least of late.

Ever heard of Billie Jean King?

Billie Jean King beat a has-been Bobby Riggs whose tennis career peaked in 1939. Would you care to make a wager on a match between the best women’s tennis has to offer against the best men’s tennis has to offer?

Yes, I’m sure that if you put the world’s best women tennis players up against 55-year-old-retirees like Bobby Riggs, they’d do well.

Maybe. There were TWO “Battles of the Sexes,” and Bobby Riggs WON THE FIRST MATCH, beating Margaret Smith Court. She was the world’s #1 ranked player. He swept her in straight sets. He was 55, remember, and had been out of tennis for twenty years.

There’s a reason that we have separate tours for men and women; if it was co-ed, no woman would ever qualify for a major tournament.

Personally, I’d pay large American dollars to watch Patrick Rafter play tennis. But then again, I’d pay large American dollars to watch him NOT play tennis, too.

Can’t say the say for Venus Williams.

Look, I’m well aware of all the extenuating circumstances of that match, and whatnot.

But the fact remains that he was carrying on about how no woman could beat a men’s player, and how his maleness would make up for age, and he got whupped.

Personally, I wouldn’t bet on that. Have you ever watched the mixed doubles? Granted, it’s not the same as true coed tennis, but it’s as close as we’re gonna see professionally, and the women hold their own.

Which is not to say that I think there shouldn’t be separate tours…

Sure, though my bet would go dfferent ways depending on the surface, and who the best were at the time.

Lindsay Davenport vs. Pete Sampras on clay would be slaughter.

I say that have the women go 5 sets per match, or have everyone go 3 if time is a factor.

You’re on. Any surface, any time. I don’t care who’s hot at the time.

Here’s a more interesting matchup. The women’s collegiate national basketball champions vs. a state high school boy’s championship team. My money’s on the guys. Any takers?

Not exactly. The women generally aren’t expected to deal with the man’s serve, and you’ll notice that in rallies, the women get the ball hit to them far more often than the men do. I’m afraid men can hit the ball a lot harder than the women can.

Did anyone see a doubles match that was shown while rain had delayed play? It was some older guy, and a younger guy playing mens doubles and was the funniest thing I’ve seen in years. I was honestly in tears watching it. There was one point where the older guy managed to win a point on his knees, and so for the next serve, he decided to stay that way (OK, you had to be there  ).

I don’t even know if this was a real match or an exibition since I switched on half way through, and they didn’t mention it at the end.

So, who were these guys? Can I find more of their games?

I’d just like to address this:

I am a Network Administrator, but I work part time due to health issues. I make proportionally the same as a well paid full timer in the area. Normally (around here) this job is a salaried position. I took the high end of the salaries that are paid here and figured out the hourly rate to arrive at my pay demand and received it.

I fully expect to make proportionally the same as a full time worker, but not the same annual pay (of course).

I agree about the tennis pay, though. If the female players are going to demand equal prizes, they need to first lobby to make the matches the same number of sets.
