PBS' African-American Lives (parts one and two)

Is anyone watching this? I clean forgot to set my VCR and I’m the type of person who refuses to watch something this important jumping in the middle of it. I walked through the living room during the Oprah Winfrey segment and now I want to see the whole thing from the beginning. This has the potential to be at least as important as Louis Gates’ Africa series or Eyes On The Prize.

I can DVR them for you if they come on again. Plus, they might be on On Demand.

Thanks for the reminder, I had forgotten that this was coming on! I’ll have to try and catch it. They will be hard-pressed to top “Eyes on the Prize” but we shall see!

There’s a good article about it in today’s USA Today. Nothing totally fascinating about Goldberg or Winfrey (West Africa and Native American, etc.), but one instance found that a woman was evidently Italian rather than African in her ancestry. That’d be a shocker.

I’d love to have this done to see if it’s true I may have a black ancestor, to determine what Indian tribes my Native ancestry is most consistent with (I’d always heard it was Creek but I have my doubts, though my orthidontist told me I definitely have native ancestry due to a shovel shaped indenture on my inciscors that only occurs in Native Americans and some Asians).

I wonder out of curiosity- a good friend of mine is about (rather, at least) 1/4 Choctaw Indian, which is enough to get tuition assistance at many state colleges. Unfortunately he has no documentation because it was destroyed in a fire 50 years ago, though it’s obvious he has Native ancestry just from looking at him. I wonder if this DNA test proved conclusively he has significant NA ancestry if there’s anyway he could get his eligibility back.
