PBS Pledge Drives: Why does the schedule change??

Three or four times a year, the programs we regularly watch on KCET, the PBS station in Los Angeles–like New Yankee Workshop, This Old House, California Gold, and The Antiques Roadshow–disappear from their late-afternoon time slots on the weekends. Does PBS do this because, like Ted Turner, they anticipate more attention if they change their schedule–and attention is critical at pledge time? It sure leaves people with linmited tastes up a creek…

yeah, whats up with PBS? they try to pimp us with stuff that they ordinarly never play (and not even as good as the regular schedual, some times!) and expect us to give them a bunch of money! i really enjoy PBS and i have to pay extra for it on the shit-a-lite dish service. i can never seem to find the shows i really enjoy. they never seem to have a regular time slot. i havent seen a new episode of nova, frontline, american experiance or any other cool shit i like in so long, i forgot what intelligent tv is like! the only show i can regularly depend on is austin city limits. oh, i see plenty of promos for these shows, and they always say “coming next month!”. i want exact times, please!

oh well, there is always comedy cental…(oh, that dave attell and his antics! he’s the robin leech of the subrosa societies)

No Kidding about the Bad viewing during begging week.
The station here (WGTE) has rerun it’s own production of the story of the Art Glass movment in Toledo that I could just scream! Not to mention “The Storied life of Millie Benton” and what do Ohioans care about the Mackinaw bridge? apparently WE MUST BE INFORMED! (shutter)But on the good side, I could probly see BLAST a few more times just for the"Loss" and “Simple Gifts” bits.
. I guess it is all up to the local stations as to the programming. I am lucky enough to be in a place that I can choose between two different PBS stations(WBGU)and what one dosn’t show the other just might.
. Generaly speeking, The scedules, as far as I can recreate by crossing the comon shows on both stations.
…MONDAY…
Antiques Roadshow and Masterpiece Theatre, moved from Sunday night.(Thank goodness for Monday Night Football,But What will I do after January?)
…TUESDAY…
NOVA and American Scientific Frontiers. It is sooo nice seeing Alan Alda!
…WEDNESDAY…
Rremains the “Performance” night. Here is where Kennedy Center Honours and the Three Tenors will show up.(Thankfully Law And Order is a good show, for network)
…THURSDAY…the previos slot for Steve and Norm,it was taken by Antiques Roadshow U.K. Wich is nowhere as well done as it’s American cousin(But, I’m watching “Survivor” during that time slot.)also Mystery.Nice to see Heddy Wainthrops sidekick Jeffery as Pippin in the upcoming LotR movie
…FRIDAY…
Washington Week in Review. After that it is reserved for local programming.
…SATURDAY…
Again, our local station reruns Antiques Roadshow.KUDOS to WBGU for showing The Red Green show here!I just love my Unkle Red!
…SUNDAY…
Alternates between American Experience, and American Masters. These previosly showed on Mondays.
. The mystery of where Norm and Steve went may be answered if your local station has a “HOW-TO” Weekend. They do love to show the cooking shows, home improvement, gardening, sewing, and woodworking shows on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.I love that my local station shows different cooks during the week.Indeed Dominic Garabaldi is a Gift from God.The same goes for Weekday afternoon programming.
And again please remember that the programming is up to th local stations. If you join…(SHAMELESS PLUG) you generally get a viewers guide from the stations that has the local programming listed. They usualy come out monthly.
. There are a few programs I have seen I wish they would Rerun.1900 House, The American Presidents and Sister Wendy’s American Collection a 4 parter interrupted by 9/11 come to mind.
Charlie Rose gets the weekday 11 p.m. to yakk
. Frontline has been shown on wednesday here but it is not a regular slot. And has been about nothing but Terrorism since 9/11
Begging week is the pits. But I do enjoy PBS, and watch it daily. We support National Public Radio. But I believe the lack of comercial interruptions worth paying for.
You made me want to start a new string.SHOWS PBS SHOULD RERUN BECAUSE YOU CAN’T FIND THEM ANYWHERE ELSE. Should in be in Cafe Socity?
…HAPPY VIEWING…

You’ve hit on one of the reasons I quit supporting PBS - I was sick of NEVER getting to see a complete project on This Old House.

Announcer:“TOH will return in two weeks…maybe, except that we might move it to a different day and possibly at a different time, and we may or may not be showing the same project you were watching before the Pledge Drive!”

But what really tore it for me was Chicago WTTW’s Monty Python marathon. They were going to show Python all night and they even got John Cleese in the studio to promote it. And then - they CENSORED it! It wasn’t much, I admit - they “pixellated” the naked lady at the newstand in the “Dull Life of a City Stockbroker” sketch - but it was enough to make me realize the station was pandering to some person or organization that was giving them a lot more money than I possibly could. I realize PBS was caught short when the government cut their funding - but if they’re going to allow some local foundation to dictate their programming practices (something the gov’t was never allowed to do), then I don’t want anything to do with them.

I almost repented my decision when WTTW showed Firesign Theatre’s Weirdly Cool a few nights ago - but the rest of their Pledge Drive specials were the same old self-help seminars, the Doo-Wop show and the Blenko glass story again. I didn’t call with my donation.

dougie, I’m sorry if I killed your thread. I certainly didn’t mean to!
