I watched this show about the civil war in Yemen and what it’s like for the regular guy. I learned a few things;
#1-It sucks to be the little guy with a family who just wants to get by.
#2-All these Muslims are killing each other but they still hate America and Israel.
#3-There may be a billion of them but once they get done killing each other there won’t be.
#4-The rest of us are really lucky to live almost anywhere else.
What do you think they would have thought of the American Civil War. Or the IRA. Which is basically what is going on in Yemen.
Or WWII, which was a war of aggression instigated by two of the most technologically and cultural advanced nations on the planet.
Well, a huge difference is that neither The American Civil War nor WWII were based on or caused by religious beliefs. They might identify a tiny bit with the IRA, but Irish Catholics are still infidels so ultimately who cares. Plus this is why in America we see similarities between Irish and Arab terrorism. They have both been fighting for centuries over what, for us, seems like ridiculously outdated religious concepts…
“All these muslims” meaning in fact some thousands of the Yemani fighting factions
How lovely the religious and the racial animuses that lead people to jump from the Yemanis and in fact some armed factions fighting to making statements about all the muslims… Such sophisticated thinking.
Indeed I feel very lucky not to live in a country where the white Christian gunmen with the various hatreds against the racial and the religious minorities do not exist and where the civilized laws on ownership of weapons to kill exist. I feel sad for those who have to live under the threat of the random mall shootings or the doctor killings over a right to abortion or just simply the hatreds to have shooting in a church due to the skin color…
Neither is the conflict in the Yemen. It is power and tribal control of the resources.
But so the americans who hear a label make the sweeping conclusions on stereotypes and half informations.
The confusion is over the Americans extremely poor grasp of history as of course the Irish did not fight each other for centuries - and of course Arab =/= Muslim.
Not that the Yemanis are fighting over religion itself, the Houthis (Ziadis shia who are not in fact problematic to the majority of the sunni, and are extremely diffrernt from the 12er of the Middle East - the label is a false friend) are allied with some of the Sunnis, and it is about the uplanders factions against the low lander and the coastal tribes. This is not a centuries old combat, the Yemen was in fact a united kingdom under the Ziadi Imamate without stress for centuries - the idea of such is not historical and based on superficial stereotypes and half information combined with gross ignorance (in fact it is in living memory the Ziadi imamate allied with the Ibn Saud against the Arab socialist factions backed by Nasser - the tale of centuries of conflict is complete ahistorical ignorant prejudiced nonsense).
