I’ve watched the first handful of YouTuber Gopher’s “Let’s Play” videos for Dishonoured 2, and it looks like a fun game. But given that it’s a sequel, and there are callbacks to the original game (for example, choosing which character to play), should I/must I play the original before the sequel?
And as a follow-up, is the original still worth playing at this time? Sometimes PC games don’t age well…
Dishonored 2 starts out with backstory, but I’d recommend starting with the first. It’s actually aged very well - the graphics are a bit dated, but the gameplay is still solid. The sequel builds a bit on the gameplay and updates the graphics, but it’s still a very distinctive design style. You don’t NEED to play the original first, but it gives you a more solid storyline for the second.
D1 is quite worth playing on its own. In addition to getting more of the story, if you play D2 before D1, you might bemoan some of D2’s improvements while playing D1 whereas if you play D1 before D2, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by those improvements. It’s preferable to make the great act follow the very good one rather than the other way around.
You may also want to get the DLCs which I understand to be worth it.
I’ve only played the first but the game is very story based and I can’t imagine the second stands up on its own at least storywise. It holds up really well though so I would have no qualms about playing it. Easy enough to read up on the story if you rather not though.
Play D1. Not because you HAVE to, but because it’s an awesome game. Definitely play all the DLC.
I’d play Dishonored first, but if I did go straight from one to the other I’d definitely pick the non-Corvo character in D2. They revamped Corvo a bit for the sequel, but his bag of tricks does feel very similiar.
