I loved Ascendancy. In fact, I think I logged as many hours with that as I did MoO. It wasn’t hyper-original, but it had style, fun technologies, for once, a good AI, and races that really had important distinctions.

But Metal Gear Solid 2 as the second most overrated game?? Blasphemy! The story may have been kooky, but it kept me captivated from beginning to end, and it does make sense in a way.

No, it doesn’.t It looks really good on top, but its so amazingly stupid an fascile once you get down to it that I consider the entire thing to be a pathetic waste.
Raiden was a shallow pretty-boy. He sucks. The grim, gritty American Snake is so much cooler. And yeah, the gameplay is good, but you never actually get to do any of it. The game is horribly short, and its mostly taken up with long cutscenes.
Whatever the merits of the game, it’s simply bad journalism (insofar as gaming rags can be called “journalism”) to have someone with a financial interest in the success of the game pen a review of that game.
My pokey ol’ PII is due for an upgrade, and I’ve had Black & White on my short-list of promising games that are a bit beyond my current capabilities but prime to be fished out of the bargain bin when the time comes.

I’m still bitter over Lucasarts’ Rebel Assault, from maybe twelve years ago. The screengrabs looked great on the box, but it was a bummer to find it was a “shoot at the targets in a crappy low-res multimedia presentation” effort with zero replayability. You expect more from Lucasarts.
Most overrated game ever in my books would have to be Star Wars Galaxies by a long shot. So much hype, so many promises, utter crap.
Quests were limited to one of two types:
Go here and kill this
Go here, pick up this, and deliver it there
NPC ‘sentience’ was entirely non-existent. Cities comprised of NPC’s literally just -standing- around with no apparent purpose or life. Dialogue with NPCs was non-existent. Points-of-interest in the surrounding wilderness were far and few between, and with no apparent reason for being there. And the list goes on.
Worse of all, you -know- that the companies backing this game (i.e. Sony and Lucas Arts) have pretty much unlimited funds and the ability to have made a great game if they wanted to.
you are kidding right?? on the off chance you’re serious, here is a couple questions for you - [ul][]can you turn from 0 to 180[sup]o[/sup] instantly and shoot with any degree of accuracy? [] say you’re standing in front of a castle and you’re close enough that you have to look up and down, left and right to scan the entire castle face. can you aim and cover all points of the castle face while running/strafing? [*] say you’re under fire from someone 130[sup]o[/sup] behind you up on a ledge, can you turn around immediately and return fire while strafing/running at the same time?[/ul] … an FPS with a gamepad, pffft.
