PC Gurus - SM BUS CONTROLLER?

This is for an Asus P4P800 mobo (i865PE) and XP Home, ATI 9500 Pro.

I put together my newest system the other day. All is fine and good, but in the device manager I have an exclamation mark next to “SM BUS CONTROLLER”. I tried to reinstall the driver but nothing is found.

From messages in another computer forum, it was recomended to me to instal the Intel Chipset drivers, which I did (version 5, from the Intel website, which are the same ones from the Asus website) The exclamation mark went away. Yay!

The only problem though is that as soon as I did I started getting hard lockups with 3D programs. I can’t remove them, so I reinstalled XP (I turned off restore).

Is there something else I should be doing? Should I install these drivers before I do anything else with the XP install? I have yet to install the service pack or any video/audio drivers. I am now at the stage of super-fresh install. Normally, my next step would be to go to windows update and get the SP and updates from there, but I haven’t done that yet.

As well, what does the SM BUS CONTROLLER do?
