PC Won't Acknowledge One USB port

For some reason My PC doesn’t seem to see things I plug into the USB Port on the front of my PC. The ones along the top work and the ones on the back work but not the front. Which is a pain for when I want to just quickly connect a flash drive or my MP3 Player. I have Google but not much help out there, thought I would pick brains here. Any suggestions are appreciated. Also I apologize f this is the wrong place for this kind of question. Thanks.

if you feel up to it. look in side the case to see if the wires connecting the front port to the motherboard.

if it is found not to work through whatever troubleshooting advice or other help that you can find then get a 3 foot USB extension cord.

Open the windows Device Manager. Instructions below

Go to the ‘Universal Serial Bus Controllers’ and expand.

go to each item on the list. Right click and select uninstall.
The computer will uninstall the driver, then automatically reinstall. This will sort out many USB problems.

Note- your mouse or keyboard might temporarily stop working, but will reset after a few minutes

Aye. Device Manager is where it’s at. You may also find a resource conflict there, which should be obvious if present, and then you can look up how to fix it from there.

You could also make sure there isn’t a visible break or a lot of trash/crap crammed in it. USB ports can be physically broken, of course.

I am having exactly the opposite problem:

My mouse works when connected to the front USB port, but will not work
when connected to any of the six rear ports.(I prefer to position the PC
with the “rear” connection ports facing me rather than facing the wall).

This is despite the fact that yesterday my Geek got all ports working
at his shop.

Fucking PC shit like this makes me wonder about such issues as bells and whistles,
change for change sake, etc.:

The old PS2 (or whatever they were called) mice were all plug-it-in-and-that’s
all- it-takes; no need to fuck around around with the Control Panel settings, ever.
WTF change over to this USB shit anyway? Could it be that much cheaper to
manufacture?

And there is an especially fucked up Catch-22 from my seat back at home:
At startup with the mouse plugged into a nonworking port I get a prompt
for new hardware management, but I can’t operate it to fix my mouse problem
because the mouse won’t work to begin with!!!

I would second what johnpost said, the front ports may not be plugged into the motherboard at all. If this is the case it’s a simple matter of plugging it in, but, it can be a not so simple matter of plugging it into the right place. You need to have a diagram of your motherboard’s connections, cause if you plug them into the wrong place bad things can happen.

Note: If you plug in a ‘power only’ USB device like a light or a fan you’ll be able to tell if the front ports are connected. They should have power regardless of whether Windows sees them or not. If they don’t then they’re not connected at all.

Thanks everyone. When I get home I will give some of these suggestions a go.
