Pearls Before Swine......Tom Rapp

As an ardent Folk/Rock fan, somehow I was never exposed to Pearls Before Swine. While listening to some sound clips on Amazon, I was intrigued by the music and searched for an anthology to purchase. I purchased a CD titled, “Constructive Melancholy” 30 years of Pearls before Swine. This CD is described as being the Middle period of their catalog with the tracks comprised of music from 5 albums recorded for Reprise. There are 26 tracks and I gave the CD a spin last evening. I’ve been left with a curiosity of the early period, the 2 albums recorded for the ESP label in the late '60’s. Of the two,“One Nation Underground” may be a better representation of their sound because “Balaklava” is considered by critics to be more of a Viet Nam anti-war record. If you’ve heard these two albums, please enlighten me.

No, that’s nonsense. And it’s a great record. “Translucent Carriages”…man…imagine Tim Buckley circa Hello and Goodbye under heavy anesthesia from just having had all his teeth removed and you’ve got an idea of the sound. “Jesus…raised the dead…but who…will raise the living?” As far as I’m concerned, those first two albums are the ones. Ultra-weird, crude, sloppy, and great.

I knew I’d get that backwards. :smack:

Biffy, Both CD’s are available at Tower Records as I type this. Which of the two do you prefer? I’ll probably eventually obtain both, however, I want the exposure to be the real experience. I appreciate your opinion!

In my opinion " One nation underground" is much better than “Balaclava”
