As reported by my daughter. Car started. When put in reverse transmission did not engage. Turned the car off. Tried to restart. The car lurched forward several inches and then stalled. Now it won’t even turn over. Lights and radio work. The battery was replaced 5 days ago.
I am thinking she is not accurately describing events, and yet the car now will not even turn over. Any ideas?
Just asked. She was insulted but more pertinent is the fact that our mechanic (who is great) was just a few blocks away came over and could not start it either. So we will find out fairly soon. But I am interested in more guesses.
The goodfoot is broken.
Papa’s new bag got sucked up the tailpipe.
The roof is on fire.
The car is a little red corvette.
It just needs to go to the car wash.
It was involved a little kung fu fighting.
I once borrowed a van to move some stuff. Some part of the shifter cable/linkage broke right after I’d put the thing in reverse to back out of a spot and so I couldn’t then shift to drive to proceed out of the Walgreens parking lot. Foolishly, I turned off the engine to let everything ‘reboot.’ Of course, this prevented the van from starting at all and I had to arrange for a Sunday tow.
I would check the charging system/battery first being as that is one problem - could be causing the transmission problem as well - what with all the computers in cars these days. A low voltage could cause all sorts of problems.
Car models vary of course, but I have never driven an automatic that wouldn’t start with your foot off the brake pedal. The Prius might be a special case. I do depress the brake out of habit because I have to to put the car in gear, anyway, but my car does start without the brake pedal depressed.
