I’m sure you went through a lot of these while in school… That pale yellowy-orange with a pocket on the left inside flap and the “useful information” chart on the right. Remember writing captions for the athletes in the illustrations and adding to the pictures?
Such as:
–drawing a lollipop in the far-right runner’s hand and making him look like he’s licking it;
–making the two football players look like they’re scuffling over a dime;
–making the basketball player look like he’s stabbing the other guy;
I read somewhere that they only sold them west of the rockies…
life without Pee-Chees. I can’t imagine. And it was a travesty when they started making them in colors instead of, well, just peach.
Anyway, to the OP, not purposefully…but over the course of the year, they’d get colored in, written on, doodled on, etc. But there was never a plan, more a moment of boredom in math class.
I’m afraid the Pee-Chee’s came -well- after my time, Viva. I graduated from HS in 1970–I don’t even remember the portfolio being part of the school supplies back then! I did decorate my binder and notebooks with “artwork” though–usually “psychedelic” in nature, colored in with the thin felt-tip markers. We would also get bookcovers, supplied by local merchants–they too would become decorated and some of the ads changed in not-nice ways (one of the merchants was a farm equipment & supply company…).
When I started my sophomore year of high school, I taped together 2 PeeChees with some 3 inch wide strapping tape. Then I taped all the left over exposed surfaces. Except for some minor repairs, those 2 PeeChees lasted all 3 years of high school. I started using PeeChees in grade school in the early 60’s. I have 3 of them that I use to keep owner’s manual for various household items, they are each about 20 years old. They are pink, blue and bright yellow, PeeChee’s were available in other colors then.
During second grade class while the teacher was reading aloud to us from “Black Beauty” some of us (myself included) were coloring our PeeChees. She stopped and chewed us out for doing that.
