No in-depth review, but I saw this tonight at the discount cinema and really enjoyed it. Did anyone else catch it? What’d you think?
Loved it! Thoughts: very sweet, very humane. Well-acted. Whimsical but with a serious message. Surprised at how much I got used to the nose to where the thought of her without it was odd. Christina Ricci is wonderful. I could watch James McAvoy watch paint dry and would still be besottedly in love with him.
I know this got bad reviews, but those reviewers are a bunch of old cynical poops, worthy of much scorn.
It was delightful. My daughter (age nine) and I saw it together and we both really enjoyed it. It has a great message and I’m slightly saddened that it didn’t do better in the theaters. Kids (especially little girls) need sweet movies that send a message about accepting and liking yourself.
I’m not sure that boys would like it though – it’s like a starter chick flick.
Well, I’m a (26 year old) boy and I loved it but I’m not exactly typical of my gender.
I got used to the nose, too. I thought she was beautiful either way.
I just watched this tonight with my kids. I thought it was a well done little modern fairytale. My daughter really liked it (age 11) and my son enjoyed it (age 8).
Does anyone know why this movie took two years to be released? It was finished 2006 but not released until 2008.
The movie had a few great lines/visual gags.
I loved the part about getting the butler sneakers and the red sneakers.
I love the look of relief on the father’s face when the mother loses her voice.
The Penelope and the Beast line.
It is coming up in my queue, but I don’t know when I’ll get to it.
I liked it, but I thought she was cute as a button either way, probably better with the curse, actually. It’s not like she’s the Elephant Man…which might have been too strong for the tone of the movie, so I’m not criticizing.
I loved it too. It’s such a sweet movie, and James McAvoy is gorgeous. I was surprised to find myself preferring her looks pre-curse-removal as well. I actually didn’t quite recognize Christina Ricci at first when the nose was removed, despite knowing it was her.
Saw it on DVD last year and loved it - another person who is surprised it didn’t do better in cinemas, or indeed that no-one seems to have heard about it. I agree it’s very much a modern fairy tale, and a good one at that. By the time finished I wanted to slap the mother hard (and repeatedly) though, guess that just goes to show what a good actor Catherine O’Hara is.
One thing I didn’t get - this film is quite blatantly shot in London, so why all the pretense about it being New York?
Because they wouldn’t have had an excuse to make Burn Gorman use that abysmal American accent.
I love Gorman from Torchwood, but I just wanted him to STOP. TALKING.
That aside, it was a very enjoyable fluffy movie.
No clue. The accents were actually very bad for several actors. Worse than I am use to. It seems like the English actors are usually better at American accents than vice-versa but in this case they were pretty poor.
To compound that they also had Reese Witherspoon in it who is one of the few American actresses that can do a flawless English accent, and yet decided to have her be a New Yorker instead!
BTW: It was Reese’s movie. She directed and produced it I believe.
