Right, I haven’t seen them for years, so I found plenty in the newsgroups. They have pictures you can download & check.
The guys have half flaccid dicks that just sort of ‘rest’ on the woman’s mouth or vagina. No cum shots. Kinda weird they can’t get it all the way up.
I used to read those books about 10 years ago (once I could legally buy them) and they were not explicit. The phase lasted about 1 year. I still read Playboy on occasion (yes, READ). The contact and penetration was either blocked out or fell just short of touching. Are you now saying that there is contact and penetration shown in Hustler and Penthouse? If that is the case, I might pick one up.
I haven’t seen a lot of Hustler lately, especially since it turned into a Urination Fetish mag (I have no interest in watching waste elimination, no matter how attractive the females involved) but from what I have seen of Penthouse, I wouldn’t call what you see there “penetration.” (Playboy is still far and away tamer than any other mag, however, in that it rarely shows more than an accidental shot of real female genetalia.) Most of the “sex” in penthouse involves one of two types of pictures:

“Near” sexual contact: Either the penis is outside of the vagina/mouth/anus just poised to “go in” or there is incidental contact.

Convenient positioning: Their bodies are aranged in such a way as to suggest sex, but not actually “show” it. Generally, the woman-on-top pose is most common here. For all we know the guy isn’t even erect, never mind in her, in these pictures.
Now, again it has been a few years since I have seen alot of Penthouse, but I have not seen any recent pictures to suggest that their standards have changed much. Unlike video, most mainstream print sources of pornography don’t show actual penetration, and any “money shots” are look rediculously like hand soap, if shown at all.

jayron 32, if you pick up any copy of Penthouse from the last 2 years or so you will see full view penetration. You will see jism (whether it is real or not is another matter) shooting out of some guys erect pecker. Hell, I even saw a woman with her entire fist up her quim, all the way to the wrist. Dildos up the ass, too.
I think the OP is asking why are pictures like this allowed now, whereas before, they were of the “almost but not quite” variety.
The whole pissing thing is beyond me as well. I haven’t seen Hustler, but PH seems to be catering heavily to the urination fetish.
My only question is: why Playboy, Hustler, et al., didn’t go hardcore in the first place??
Well, for that matter, why didn’t they have shows with as much swearing and (nearly) explicit sexual content as, say, NYPD Blue, on TV 30 years ago? Weren’t most of the TV laws the same then as they are now?
Seems like the same motive:
TV: Attempt to retain audience going to cable, VCRs and DVDs and other media
Porn Mags: Attempt to retain audience going to video and the Web, etc.
Seems like the same thing kept them in check: You can only veer so far outside the boundaries of the mainstream before you lose the bulk of the audience.
Over time the boundary moves out, and you can go farther without losing potential audience.

as far as tv/movies go, i was wondering why they consider it ok to show a womens breasts, yet they never let the camera drop below the waist on either gender…why are breasts ok, and only given the rating “r”…i know it might sound like an ignorant question, but curiousity makes me ask
MC, speaking of the “bulk” of the audience, maybe they should have shown Franz nude 30 years ago. It certainly would have been less…um…bulk.

My mother gave me a picture a few weeks back. It’s a picture of me at about 12 years old reading a Playboy magazine, for the articles of course.
I would never support giving kids Playboy magazines to look at.
I wouldn’t give porn to a kid either. Although porn used to be a lot less…objectionable. It was just nice girls casually undressed. No kid should see the stuff in Hustler or Penthouse today.
