people are gay?

BWHAHAHAA!! Hilarious post.
My personal experience shows openly gay at around 1 in 30 or so, but my sample is likely skewed by being an engineer in small midwest cities. Neither very conducive to coming out.
For the poll, straight male.

I’m straight, but I will have sex with lesbians.

OTOH, of the 30,000 people in the same stadium for a Bette Midler concert, 18,543 (on average) are gay with an additional contingent of 321 L.U.G.s*, 1,121 “fag-hags”, strangely 3 snake-handling Pentecostals and nobody really knows what the “person” in the burqa and the feather boa in seat 92 H is.
I’m openly gay but I haven’t had sex since before Gore was elected, so I’m not sure how you’ll count me. (One of my co-workers is a 60ish lesbian [that’s how she identifies] whose only sexual experience was with a man during a brief relationship in college almost 40 years ago- how would she be counted, I wonder?)
*L.U.G.- lesbian until graduation

About a year and a half ago, Qadgop the Mercotan did a Doper Sexuality poll (result in this thread, original poll in this thread). It’s not a scientific study, but it is interesting. (I had forgotten that I posted some graphs based on his numbers.)

Qadgop used the Kinsey Scale of 0 - 7, with 0 being exclusively heterosexual and 7 being exclusively homosexual. Males tended to be more polarized than females. If you consider points 6 & 7 to be “gay” (which seems reasonable to me), 13% of males were in that range, and 9% of females.

I would agree with TJdude825 that the Dope has a higher percentage of gays and lesbians than the population at large.

We need someone from Wesleyan here with the two-page tightly-spaced info sheet they get at orientation about all the different gender terms they’re expected to know.

If they’ve got “genderfuck” (a man who self-identifies as straight but dresses as a woman not because he enjoys crossdressing qua crossdressing [which would be a run-of-the-mill transvestite], but because he enjoys provoking a reaction from people who see him crossdressing) I’m sure they’ve got a special term for your co-worker.

No, no, I was saying that I guess that only 1 in 3 of the poster thus far was gay! I know about me, just not necessarily them (hard to tell just by a post sometimes  ). I was trying to clear this up last night, Mathocist, but my computer wouldn’t cooperate.

Per bonzer’s cite it’s usually reported as 3-5% of total pop for those IDing as more or less exclusively gay. People who are even occasional bisexuals could easily infill that total to 10% or more if having a homosexual experience or homosexual relationship puts you into the “gay” category for tabulation purposes.

Re the SDMB’s higher than usual queer content it is obviously indicative of the fact that the SDMB is a simply a fabulous place to hang out!

Well, our little statistic goes up with this post; how many does that make? Do I get a toaster?

(The toaster I got when I came out is over 40 years old now.)

Being a big fan of women’s college basketball, I would have to say that there are a LOT of lesbians who go to the games. The women’s pro game has an even higher percentage just based on my casual observations. I don’t know enough gay men to have an opinion but I would suspect that sports isn’t as high on their list of leisure activities as it is for straight men.

Count me on the gay side of the column.

I think, as a percentage of online citizens vs. society as a whole (remember, a lot of people do not have internet access), that there is a higher percentage of homosexuals online than there is in society as a whole. I have no figures to back this up, it’s just the impression that I get.

one thing I’ve noticed, is with the internet, I’ve been exposed to all sorts of variations in sexual proclivites. From net porn or whatever…who knows, but I’m certainly not as straight as I was when I first went online, if that makes any sense at all!

This might just mean that there are more out homosexuals online than offline. There are some folks who aren’t comfortable coming out with people they know face to face, but are in the relative anonymity of a message board.

Um… given how many straight women write and read mm slash, I’d say no, since while thinking about gay sex, they aren’t characters in theie own fantasies…

Almost any “special” gathering tends to be skewed, as far as I can see.

For some reason this reminds me of Jerry Seinfeld’s example of a cross-sectional view of adult humanity in NYC. When challenged by “Elaine” on his estimate of only 4 to 6% non-ugly (she figured about 25%) he asked her if she had been to the DMV lately. “It’s a LEPER COLONY!” he wailed. (When asked how all “those people” were getting together if “UNDATABLE!” he blandly replied: “Alcohol”!)

In any event, I’d agree that the Department of Motor Vehicles would tend to be considerably less skewed than any kind of sporting event.

BTW, I agree about the closeted married men. In fact, in my pre-Internet days, I was involved in writing networks, and I knew of an UNCLOSETED gay male who married for love and to produce children. He said that “disinterested” sexual intercourse with a woman was quite possible. At least for him.

True Blue Jack

Especilally two at a time if they are bi, right?

IMO, if we could really determine this sort of thing accurately, we would find that the overwhelming majority of humanity is bisexual. Most have traditionally just followed the path of least resistance within their societies and adopted heterosexual behavior because it was satisfactory enough for them. It seems to me that being gay has obtained a favorable cachet in some circles, and the opposite effect may taking place.

Also, we might be surprised at the percentage of the population that is functionally asexual, not from any moral convictions, but simply from a feeling that it simply isn’t worth the effort, or maybe they have better things to do (can you say “sublimation” - I knew you could). Given the preoccupation with sex in our daily lives, THIS is actually the group that is probably a marginalized minority.

I’m having an identity crisis. I’m a lesbian trapped in a man’s body.

anyhoo…great Seinfeld reference. I just watched that the other day. There’s also the episode called the Beard where Elaine falls for a gay guy who she goes to the theatre with as his straight disguise, and tries to make him “change teams”.
Historically, homosexuality ain’t too strange. When Jesus came to everyone’s bedroom, everyone stopped having so much fun.

Cite?

Sorry. I know it’s basically an opinion, but I’ve heard this one dozens of times, but it’s still never been convincing. There’s never been a reason WHY people are bisexual - except along the lines of “Well, how do you KNOW there aren’t invisible pink unicorns behind you? Huh? Prove it!” Why most societies of which I am aware (New Guinean tribes that feature ritualized homosexuality being the exception - and even they don’t seem to feature homosexual and heterosexual sex in the same context) be predominantly heterosexual - shouldn’t at least SOME societies, if we’re all bisexual at heart, treat gay and straight sex equally, encouraging people to fuck either sex?

You can’t claim it’s cultural norms if EVERY society seems to feature similar norms. Besides, simple biology would seem to suggest that gay sex is basically a waste as far as spreading ones genes goes. Bisexuality would simply mean you’re having the wrong kind of sex half the time. Certainly, one could argue that it creates some variety of kinship bonds (this assuming that the hypothetical society were both bisexual and polygamous) but given that that doesn’t seem to happen in any society, wouldn’t that trait be then bred out of us?

Gay male here, btw, for those counting.

Speak for yourself! I’ll have you know Jesus and I had a great deal of fun!

gay men can too have sex with females.
The one I knew was with me and 5 other women before me(for whatever reasons)
