People from minority groups are suddenly buying more guns

Big surprise, we’ll have to disagree. Some people accelerating gun/ammo purchases under Obama were doing so simply to hedge the risk of future restrictions preventing those purchases. Again, most gun laws have grandfathered anything people already had. So if there’s any chance of restrictions during a party/politician’s term, it’s completely rational to buy now not later. And Obama has said he wants more restrictions (albeit ‘just common sense’, fine, but that’s his opinion), and Democrats in general, as on the internet, often speak of wanting drastic gun restrictions. 100% rational to respond to that by buying now.

OTOH if people bought guns under Obama to potentially ‘fight the govt’, I agree that’s paranoid. But so is any idea Trump is going to come after non-whites. So in that case it’s competing paranoia, but in case of getting guns/ammo grandfathered out of future restrictions, that actually makes sense if new restrictions are at all likely. Under a GOP admin, they aren’t at all. Under a Democratic admin that possibility does exist. That’s the difference.

What about white liberals? I’ve got a gun but am considering buying another one.

Any uptick in white liberals buying guns?

The more that gun ownership is normalized, the better.

This is a good trend.

No, it’s nothing paranoid about non-whites being afraid of a racist surrounded by white nationalists. It would be far more surprising if he didn’t.

This is the standard false equivalency defenders of the Right always use; no matter how hard they pretend otherwise, the sides are not remotely equivalent.

Trump has hinted that allowing the police to clamp down on civil and human rights is a good idea in Chicago.

He has called for the deportation of latino immigrants even if it breaks up millions of families (technically Obama did this too).

He supports GOP efforts to take away the right to vote of blacks and latinos

He has called on muslims to be registered.

Minorities are not wrong to be afraid of a Trump presidency.

Ironically we will probably see a revival of what happened in the 60s and 70s with gun control, the GOP and whites in rural areas will start calling for gun control now that non-whites, muslims, etc. are armed.

Personally, I don’t think minorities arming themselves against the Trump presidency makes a lot of sense. Trump will be in control of the most powerful military in the world. There is no home arsenal that can compete against that.

But arming themselves to ward off racist troublemakers? Totally makes sense given what we’re seeing on the news…even though I suspect more people will wind end up being getting accidentally maimed and killed, thus defeating the whole thing.

I can’t imagine being so afraid that I’m willing to start packing heat, though. I’m concerned about the rhetoric I’m hearing on the internet, but in my day-to-day life, I’m just not seeing a whole bunch of violence and existential threats. When it gets to that point, I guess I’ll mosey over to the gun shop. But at that point, the shit will have probably long hit the fan. I’d probably do better just immigrating somewhere else and waiting for things to die down. Angela Davis, I am not.
