People listening "Dark Ambient"

Hello,

Why in the Burning Hells would one listen to these kind of songs? I can’t even resist a couple of seconds, it’s very uncomfortable and frightening. I feel as if a strange and presence is strolling around me while listening this crap! I am even told by my friend that he found it *very *soothing and relaxing.

If you think you have balls to resist it, here you go:

Am I only one to be frightened by that?

I listen to some dark ambient, for the same reason as your friend. I’ve not heard that piece before though, so thanks.

That may not be the response you were hoping for…

The simplest answer is this - your brain is physically different from your friend’s brain. When you listen to this music, your brain releases chemicals that make you feel bad. When your friend listens to this music, his brain releases chemicals that make him feel good.

There have been experiments that show listening to music can help relieve pain. They tested this with “relaxing” music, and they also let people play their favorite music. People listening to their favorite music felt as much pain relief as people listening to “relaxing” music.

I listen to music a lot of people don’t like. I was playing a David Sylvian song one time, and my mother said “that song sounds like it’s broken.” But I find the song really soothing and pleasant.

Are you talking about physical pain? Mental? Or both?

Edit period is very short, by the way.

Wow, that sounds like perfect music for exploring a haunted mansion in a video game.

There’s no accounting for taste, of course. Lately I’ve been big into Sunn 0))) – though granted, whenever I put it on, it’s usually a sign that I want everyone else to leave the house.

Sounds like something from David Lynch’s Rabbits.

That score, incidentally, was used to masterful effect in “Mister Meatloaf.”

Moving to Cafe Society, from IMHO.

I like it.

Here’s some dark ambient that’s specifically intended to be relaxing: Sleep Research Facility, Nostromo.

I’m not really hip to the genre but I have a bunch of albums by Bohren & der Club of Gore, and I love them.

Sounds like creepy video game background music. Not sure if I like it, but neither do I dislike it. Except for that one buddha_david linked to, which is just repulsive.

buddha_david’s link is not dark ambient. Or any kind of ambient for that matter.

After that OP, I expected something more harsh and industrial than the piece he linked. I actually liked that piece, but I like a lot of ambient, post-rock, and so forth.

Hm. Since we’re sharing, a (totally different) piece that you may find creepy:

“Shohmyoh” from Geinoh Yamashirogumi’s Akira soundtrack. I’m not really fond of the movie, but the soundtrack is one of my favorite albums.

I really like early Black Tape for a Blue Girl. I like the moodscapes the music creates. For me, it’s just a differently-emotioned variant of other, less-dark or less-ambient soundscapes like ThisMortal Coil, Dead Can Dance or Victorialand-era Cocteau Twins. [label geek]Basically, all Sam Rosenthal did was try to be Ivo Watts-Russell, but darker…[/lg]

to the op
do not go to shoutcast.com
do not search for “DroneZone”
do not play the station or the other one like it called “Zero Beat”

everyone else enjoy.

I like the song linked in OP, though in my case it might just remind me of the paper factory that I grew up next to. Sort of comforting low roar of machinery or maybe like being inside a huge, empty warm & fuzzy jet engine that floats through the sky.

Indeed. Drone-core or drone-metal.

It’s actually “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” played at 1/64th speed.

People react differently to music. I found it slightly unsettling, but I can understand how others could find it relaxing. I was reminded of the Quake soundtrack more than anything.

I love dark ambient, and always have.

Some of it is more “spiritual” than “scary”; some of it is, well, the other way around – anyways, I tend to like it all.

Off the top of my head, I’d say Lustmord’s Heresy is probably the genre’s masterpiece.

Inade is killer as well.

Hoedh is fucking incredible too, though. “Das Geistige Universum” off the Hymnvs album just takes you far, far away.

You might find this more to your liking. They aren’t Dark Ambient, they bill themselves as industrial. But they have a sort of dark ambience in this song. The Synthetic Dream Foundation - They Who Breathe Darkness Even if you don’t like the music I think you’ll like the video. (But the music isn’t as vast or menacing as what you linked by a long shot.) For the record I don’t mind the music but I wouldn’t choose it to destress either.

It’s kinda hard to dance to. I don’t find it disturbing or frightening at all though.

Personally I would put the audio linked in the OP in the category of noise rather than music. It sounds like the intro or outro to many metal or industrial songs.
