Five general questions with absolutely NO RELEVENCE to me or anyone I know. Just curious if others have experienced these general issues cropping up on various message boards.
Why is the internet so divided with people that either:
A. Freak out over little things and then say that there is “No tone of voice” on the internet
OR
B. Are totally normal and not like that?
Furthermore, I find that people with problems with other people have problems.
Am I wrong?
Is it a bad thing to make general observations of people’s posting and interaction styles? (Ie, Nasty people are referred to as un-nice, Nice people are Cool, ect)
If you “live” at a posting board and someone in particular takes every chance they have to “attack” or de-face your character over mistakes you made in the past and never accepts your apology what do you do? Is this person justified because you made the mistake in the first place?
Why is it the ones who fight the hardest, most viciously, and with the most “friends” supporting them have the LEAST amount of relevant information to speak up durring off-war times? (Explanation: They have WORDS words Words when the heat is on, but when everyone is nice and friendly, they are usually the drooling idiot in the corner waiting for another fight)
Some of you might find these questions statements hard to understand, this post is NOT for you… Have a good day…
Try to play innocent. HITLER used to try to play innocent too!
From The Jargon Dictionary
Godwin’s Law says: As a Usenet (or internet) discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one. There is a tradition in many groups that, once this occurs, that thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress.
As everyone else is busy comparing one another to Hitler, I’ll actually try to answer your questions, Karmic. Why? Because 1) I have nothing better to do right now and 2) they’re all a bunch of fascist Nazi bastards trying to smother your freedom of speech.
This is easy. Everybody can be divided into two groups like that. You have basically said everyone is either X or not X. That sums up everyone in the world.
There are two types of people on the internet:
Those that freak out and those that don’t.
Those that compare others to Hitler and those that don’t.
Those that say “hi Opal” and those that don’t.
So why is the internet so divided into those two groups? Because you just divided them.

I’m not sure if you’re wrong or not as I’m not sure if I get the question. But everyone has problems (yes, even me and you although we may not think of them as problems) and those personal problems sometimes cause personal clashes and then personal problems between two people develop. Was that clear at all or should I run that sentence through a Babbelfish?

IMO, in general, generalizations are a bad thing.

If one apologizes sincerely about past mistakes, I think the mature thing would be to let it go. If someone else continues hounding after an apology is made, I would first e-mail the person, point out that I have apologized (it is possible that the person missed that post) and ask them politely to stop. Second, if the person doesn’t stop, time to go the the Pit, a forum we have here for flames and overly-heated discussions. In the Pit, show where the apology was, and the posts when the flamee continues to be a pest about the situation.
I don’t think a person is ever justified to continue harassing a poster after an apology is made known.

Can’t say as I’ve ever noticed this here. Not to say it doesn’t exist, I’ve just never noticed it.
I feel so welcomed here! I hope that doesn’t change should i continue to come up with more rhetorical questions. The Hitler thing is widely abused I think, no one is as GOOD as hitler, KIDDING, he was bad, very bad… But to compare some ordinary posting board person to Hitler doesn’t do the history behind the name justice, because he was the cream of the crop! The top of the hill! The start all end all guy who should not have existed because of the way he moved people. Tyrants and irrate posters are not as similiar as some people claim, IMHO. =)
Karmic
And thanks for moving me to the right area, sorry for my ignorance! =)
I’ve been on a few boards (still am, actually) and noticed that people who go on the board for its “intended purpose” (such as GQ, or discussing car repair or breeds of dogs or whatever) don’t typically get into board wars. They go there, discuss whatever and ignore threads that don’t pertain to the topic at hand. A thread of flames is irrelevant to car repair, dog breeds, photography et al. It’s the people who treat the boards as social hour (I’m not saying that’s good or bad) who get all riled up and fight to the bitter end with their social hour friends backing them up.
Insightful!! I guess it takes some people a very long time to come to that conclusion and reality, while some simply smile and nod others actually are there for a reason. Barq’s has BYTE. =) Nice to meet you!

Have you been a poster board person for a while now?=) i am still new to this whole sub mentality of posting boards and the logics behind them. I actually post often on the Bronze (Well, its the Beta Bronze now; which is a “alternative” Buffy the Vampire Slayer fansite while the official board is in legal limbo durring the show’s move from WB to UPN). And it is a very small community right now mostly made up of a small group of Social Hour Socialites who think they are the cats meow of Posting Board etiquet (Sp). The whole reason for this topic on this board is A. Someone posted the link to this site on the Beta Bronze Posting Board and I found it to be a great site as far as posting boards go!
B. Because I wanted to get some unbiased opinions on my experiences with the Beta Bronze.
I am in no way asking anyone to go to the Beta Bronze to scroll or Control+F for “Karmic”, but feel free to do so (Tell them Karmic sent you to say hi). I admit to most of the accusations, but have made several apologies, but still find myself contending with a select few which I won’t name over those mistakes. They take my words and twist new meaning from them and it has gotten out of control to some extent because when these events happen, no one wins. IMHO.
Anyway, thanks for the replies and certainly keep them coming, I enjoy reading rational assumptions of these events or if even you can associate with this situation feel free to post something in reply here. Take care until then!
hehe, well not entirely rhetorical. I suppose they were more intended for honest opinions and stuff. Nothing can be truly Rhetorical on a posting board. =)Thanks for the advice, I am still working on my “wording” with certain topics. =)
I said that poorly. If you compare someone to Nazi or Hitler and mean it, it triggers Godwin’s Law. If you just don’t like the topic and start tossing the word Nazi around with the intent of triggering Godwin’s Law, it doesn’t work.
Interesting points, so basically if someone comes to thread and says someone is going to become a Natzi in their replies without actually naming someone, then it won’t happen?
Did someone here think I was going to call someone a Natzi?
I am little confused on that bit. I have really enjoyed this wonderful discussion. I have to admit some of these discussions I engage in do get a bit heated, but overall there are many nice ones that go smoothly, ie this topic/thread. I appreciate it. I actually feel like a part of something decent and not some scummy person trying to hurt and belittle everyone around me. A feeling imposed on me since finding the Bronze posting board and allowing myself to fall into the mistakes I have made. Overall life is a learning experience. I have learned that things are always bigger than I first imagine sometimes and even though I may never truly be able to control my hot temper I get a little bit closer to being a better me. Whoever says there is nothing good on the internet didn’t give it enough chance; the same can be said of anyone that has invoked “Godwin’s Law” as a last ditch attempt to salvage their fleeting humanity.
