People who laugh while they talk

Apparently, some people do neither.

Damn this board sometimes!

Here’s what got eaten by the beast:

I like watching the car-based shows on TNN on Saturdays (Trucks!, Car and Driver, Horsepower TV, and Crank and Chrome) and have noticed on a couple of the shows (Trucks! & Horsepower TV) that the hosts tend to chuckle a lot while they explain various techniques and procedures:

“You’ll need to (heh, heh) be sure to brace the frame before you (heh, heh) begin cutting the floor pans.”

Is this some sort of defense mechansim or just an annoying habit? I would guess it’s nervousness, but these guys have been hosting these shows for many years now. Any psychology-types wanna tackle this?

I’m one of those that tends to laugh when nervous. It can be kind of obnoxious, at times.

Me, too. Sometimes I know I’m doing it, it’s completely inappropriate and probably baffling to others, and I still do it anyway. And I had 2 years as a theater major. Maybe I get it from my mom. She will laugh at the most inappropriate times, for instance, once at her son-in-law’s mother’s “visitation.” But while she’s just laughing at something at the wrong time, I’ll do the laugh-while-speaking thing at any time when I might be just a little bit nervous.

I think psychologically it is a defense mechanism for nervousness. You’re afraid of rejection or ridicule, so you sort of ridicule yourself first, before they get the chance to. You’re kind of saying, “I know I’m just spouting garbage, here, I have no idea what to say, heh heh, see, I’m even laughing at myself for being such a dimwit.” Not a very productive defense mechanism, but there it is. Just my uneducated guess.

This got me thinking about how often I really do this, and it’s a lot. I guess I’m nervous a lot. Heh heh. It must be really hard for people to take me seriously.

It tends to irritate me when people laugh and talk simultaneously for no apparent reason. But after reading some of the above, I suppose I should be more tolerant or understanding. Maybe the reason this bothers me is that most people that I have known to do this were bullshitters.

Julius Hibbert Syndrome. I’m glad I don’t have it, it has been found to be… ha ha ha… deadly.

Or not. Should have a name, though, and I think that’s a good one.

A double post with one click and it gave me an error message. I feel so special!
