People who work with the public: What's the weirdest thing you ever had to "trespass" someone for?

Yeah, I know, “trespass” has become one of those active verbs when it wasn’t before.

Back when I worked with the public, I saw many cases of people who were banned from the property for varying periods of time for shoplifting, and when I worked at the big hospital, was informed about several people who were not allowed on the property themselves unless they were there for their own medical treatment.

I’m sure the Doper hivemind can tell some colorful stories of their own.

Twice when I was working at a musuem. We had a Jeep on display, and I had a couple of young ladies who couldn’t resist the urge to climb all over it despite the sign asking visitors not to touch it. I heard something on the Jeep shift and got into the room quickly enough to see the climbing off and I asked them to stay off. A few minutes later I heard another noise, saw the same thing, and told them to leave.

The second time I felt badly for the guy. We had a visitor who might have been homeless, dude was wearing what looked like a leopard print robe over his regular clothing in summer weather, and he smelled so bad I denied him entry. His stench washed over me like a tsunami and I swear I could taste it. It lingered for quite a while after he left. I had a more than a few homless people visit, even some who specifically needed to wash up as best they could in the bathroom, so it’s not like I had a problem with them on general principles, but this was the worst smelling living human I’d ever come across.

There was this one older lady who would sneak into our break area at night to collect cigarette butts from ashtrays. I happened to walk out on my break and caught her. I didn’t quite grok what she was doing or who she was at first, she was pretty mortified. Then relieved when she discovered I wasn’t too concerned.

If you haven’t encountered people like this, you can’t imagine what this means.

Many decades ago, I clerked at a store that sat next to the kind of bar that opened at first light and had people drinking in all day long. One afternoon, a creature from the swamp walked into the store to buy some sorely needed new clothing. His stink was like a force field; impenetrable. The other clerk and I flatly refused to go near him. The store manager finally took over. We never heard a word about our ducking our duties.

I had a local working in Bamako who was like walking death. Now, a lot of people in that part of the world don’t have access to running water, but we had showers and running water in our compound. The first time he came into the office space, the stench hit me in my office, which was some 30 feet from the entry door. It honestly made me gag. I had to tell the local Malian supervisor to either have the man bathe every day or refrain from coming into the office area.

Who are you to criticize their culture??

No idea what you are babbling on about. Got a problem? Take it to the Pit.

I sat around watching people get trespassed. Just curious, I guess.

My whole family is trespassed from the local “good pizza joint”. It’s all because of the owner/mngr is a right jerk. He doesn’t teach his staff(big turnover on that) to use the cash register. 90% of the time they add up in their heads or use the old school calculator by the register. So you end up with no receipt. If you have an issue with your order you have to go back to your card and try to find it, on the fly, waiting in line with pizzas ready to go.

And then they call the guy over. He never agrees with you if you got overcharged. It’s never much so we live with it. Occasionally we get a new flavor of pizza we didn’t know we liked.

But once we had to have a big war with the guy. They did a double dip on my debit card. My pizza orders are very large. Lots of folks here want pizza. A double dip was quite the amount. I sent the Lil’wrekker to fix it. The police escorted her off the property.

I sent my older daughter. She left before the police got there. I stopped payment on the debit card. Omg. That man was so mad. He called cursing and screaming. I just hung up on him.

Got a letter in the mail saying we are trespassed. Sign on his door about it. Jerk.

We still get the pizza. We haz our ways.

Having worked in urban libraries with lots of traffic, I’ve done it plenty. In the school it’s just been normal obnoxious kid behavior. There was one public library incident where the behavior itself wasn’t weird, but what happened a few days later was. There was a kid, around 11 or so, who was banned for a month for picking on younger kids and misusing the computers. After a week, when I wasn’t there, he told the librarian on duty that I’d said he could come back early. What he didn’t know was that the librarian he said that to was my wife. She called me, and told him to repeat what he’d said to her. We didn’t see him again for a while, but the story has a happy ending. He didn’t come back for months, but I saw him on the street and invited him back. Instead of picking on younger kids he spent his time helping them. I wouldn’t be surprised if he were teaching somewhere now.
