Perfect holiday destination sought, opinions welcome.

Here’s what I’m thinking would just be ideal;

I’m thinking somewhere in Mexico, Central America or the Carribean, as it’s not too far for me to go. I’m thinking maybe I’ll go for about 3 wks to a month.

I’ve travelled a lot in third world countries but have never gone to any in the above locations. (My experience has been largely in SE Asia, the Indian subcontinent and S America, if that helps.)

I love the beach, the ocean, collecting sea shells and lying in a hammock under a palm watching the sun rise or set. I also enjoy shopping for trinkets in nightmarkets and looking at local handicrafts and textiles, baskets, woodcarvings - whatever, it’s all good to me.

I’m not especially fussy over the accomodations shunning resorts and all inclusive packages, in favour of something simple and basic.

Ideally I’d like a little back water place just off the tourist trail. Travelled enough to offer basic accomodations and simple food, (I generally love the local fare and have no problem eating street food).

Smallish city, lovely beach, basic accomodations. I love scrambling over ruins in all shapes and sizes so something near by-ish would be wonderful. It doesn’t have to be anything spectacular (like Tikal) just a lovely day trip to see something interesting would be fine.

There you have it, mine are simple needs as you can see.

I’d just love to hear of any destinations you’ve been to that meet these criteria, all I need is a starting place I’ll run with your suggestions and do the research, I promise.

I’m accustomed to going away for a longer time than a few weeks and so it’s not as important to locate the perfect place straight away, I’ve always had time to wander around and find what I like but with just a few weeks I don’t seem to have that luxury.

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks y’all!
