I want to find the original publication date of Stephen Jay Gould’s article “A Biological Homage to Mickey Mouse.” I remember reading it in a Scientific American in like 1977 or so. SA online is not searchable that far back (go figure), and Google nets me nil.

Is there a publicly available portal to the Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature (if that’s even what it’s called; been years since I cracked one)?

It is in “The Panda’s Thumb” p 1980. In the Prologue, Gould says that the chapters from from his monthly column in Natural History, called “This View of Life”

Unfortunately, he does not give the original publication date of the essays.

Hmm. I read it in my highschool library. In a magazine. I’m sure they never took Natural History; it must have been published somewhere else. Hey, you know, it might have been in Horizon. Is that magazine even around any more? Kind of like *Harper’s *is now.

If you have a Seattle Public Library card, you should be able to get into the databases online - I’d try Expanded Academic Index to start - I’m not familiar with it and we don’t have access where I work, but it might have it in there.

Thanks for all your links to the article itself; I already found several copies on the web. I’m looking for a cite for the original publication date. Anyone have access to a database that shows the issue number, date, etc.–a full bibliography cite?
