Personal loans?

My girlfriend is working towards getting a legal work permit, and the biggest barrier she’s faced is coming up with the cash to pay for everything. Right now, she’s trying to come up with $2,500 as the first step towards having this woman sponsor her (I could be getting some of the facts wrong, but I believe this is the general idea behind what she’s doing…) Anyhow, she needs a personal loan. She doesn’t have bad credit (some late payments, but not too late, and not too many). She doesn’t have a great income (she probably makes around $24,000 per year with her two jobs). Anyhow, what’s the best way to get a personal loan without getting raped by the interest rates? She found one, but it was something like 22% APR, which I thought sounded obscene. Any financial experts out there know a good way to do this? Preferably with no cosigner?

Without a cosigner, she is going to have to pay the high rate and probably be glad she could get it.

$2500 to sponsor? Sounds a little on the scam side to me. Is your g/f doing this with the help of her own country’s embassy, and are you double checking what she’s being told with our own government?

My question is basically, why can’t you sponsor her, at least on a very temporary basis, or why can’t she find a company that’s willing to hire her, thereby sponsering her that way?

If she’s not a citizen or employed already, she’s probably screwed as far as loans. Nobody reputable is going to give a loan to someone that can flee or be shipped out at any given time. On the other hand, her own country should have programs in place for this type of thing, and she may want to look into that.

No, it’s not a scam…I don’t know all of the particulars, but it’s some program through the government. Of course, the program is set up to keep (a): Keep poor people out, and (b):make money, so there are all sorts of fees associated with it.

I can sponsor her, but only so she can stay in the country, NOT so that she can work. She has a job (two, actually) but she doesn’t have papers. But, her present employer is willing to sponsor her, but she needs to pay the fees associated with this program.

Forgot to add…so if anyone has any ideas about where to get her to go for that loan, I’d appreciate the input!

For a no-collateral, signature loan, that’s an excellent rate. Hopefully it’s still available. (These kinds of loans often have rates as high as 29%)
