Oops. :smack: That should be “every other college basketball team.” (I have to be more careful when I cut-and-paste.)
Hockey
1a. Calgary Flames - my moms family is from Calgary and I hated the Leafs so this was the natural choice for me.
1b. Ottawa Senators - I cheered for them as soon as they came into being mostly as an alternative to the Leafs.
-
Philadelphia Flyers - When they played Edmonton in the Stanley Cup Finals I cheered for the Flyers just to be different. It stuck.
-
Pittsburgh Penguins - I started liking them when Lemieux was drafted. I always loved him and eventually I became a fan of the team. I don’t live anywhere near Penn. so I don’t have a problem chearing for both the Pens and the Flyers.
-
Toronto Maple Leafs - Their fans are ridiculous and have this real persecution complex. Living in Toronto is a pain in the ass sometimes. I sure hope they don’t win the Stanley Cup…luckily their isn’t much chance of that.
Baseball
-
Boston Red Sox - I’ve loved them since I was a kid and luckily managed to catch the tail end of Yastrzemski’s career. It was a great day when Manny became became a Red Sock as now my favorite player was on my favorite team.
-
Toronto Blue Jays - I was 7 or 8 when I went to my first Jays game. I don’t know why I like the Jays and hate the leafs…
-
Minnesota Twins - Always liked Puckett and I stuck with them after he retired. They are really a distant third though.
-
Angels - I always loved Jim Edmonds so I watched all the angels games I could (which wasn’t many). When Vlad became an angel it gave me another reason to cheer for them.
-
NYY - see number 1.
I laughed so long and hard at this I peed my pants. Comedy fucking GOLD! I’d ask to use it as my sig, but I really can’t be bothered to have one. I’m stealing it in the future 'tho.
I just root for my hometown (grew up by the LA/Orange County border) teams:
- Dodgers
- Angels
- Lakers
- Clippers
- Ducks
- Kings
- Galaxy
- Chivas
(of course, no NFL team…sigh)
And for college, my alma mater…GO CAL BEARS! Although this weekend’s loss to UCLA hurts. And today’s Galaxy lost to Chicago. Another sigh, it hasn’t been a good year for LA based sports teams.
Football
#1 Green Bay Packers - only team who I know / am related to some of the owners (plus I grew up about 30 miles from Lambeau)
#2-32? - everyone else. I didn’t even watch this week
College Basketball
#1 Wisconsin (madison). I was at UW-Platteville when Bo Ryan was coaching there (taking the team to 3 national chapionships and 2 undefeated seasons)
#2-infinity - eveyone else. I won’t even watch if the Badgers aren’t playing
Baseball
I’ll cheer for the Cubs, unless they are playing Milwaukee.
Brian
As bad as the NY Rangers fans in the blue seats?
In all seriousness, as a lifelong Yankees fan, I always rooted against the Red Sox passionately, but never REALLY hated them. It was FUN chanting “Boston Sucks” back in 1978, but if you’d asked most of the fans at Yankee Stadium, they’d have admitted LOVING Yastrzemski, admiring Fred Lynn (who killed the Yanks at Shea Stadium in 1975 with the greatest defensive play I’ve ever witnessed in person), getting a kick out of Bill Lee, and even grudgingly respecting Pudge Fisk (a lot of Yankee fans ADORED Fisk after he yelled at Deion Sanders for loafing to 1st base).
We never really hated the Red Sox. Their FANS, on the other hand… they suffered so long, I ALMOST wanted them to win eventually just so they’d be happy.
But as it turned out, Red Sox fans are even bigger assholes when they’re gloating than when they’re whining.
Good point about Yaz and Fisk. Yaz was everything that was right about baseball and I had a gritty respect for Pudge that grew over time.
Also your final sentence is 100% true!
MLB:
- Cleveland Indians. I r Indians.
- Milwaukee Brewers. See jsgoddess’s post.
-
Detroit Tigers. I don’t hate them. I like to be in a little race with them. If we were doing poorly in a season I would like to see the Tigers go all the way.
… - New York Yankees. I hate them and their stupid payroll and their stupid “page 6” lineup. Fuck those guys.
- Boston Red Sox. Because I hate Manny Ramierez. I hate him so bad. I hate his stupid dreadlocks and his stupid smug swing. I want to rip his eyes out. And all their stupid fans too.
NFL:
-
Cleveland Browns. They drive me bananas. I don’t love them half as much as I love the Tribe. But you can’t be from Cleveland and not love to hate those Browns.
…
5,572. Pittsburgh Steelers. I hate them more than any pro sports team ever. Pittsburgh just…sucks.
College Sports:
- Ohio State. It’s not hard to love OSU. They are the shit. It’s a matter of state pride to love those Buckeyes!!
- University of Georgia. One of my best friends loves UGA like I love the Indians. Maybe even more so. I’m an honorary Dawg.
- Kent State University. My alma mater. Actually not bad at basketball…kind of bad in everything else.
-
University of Akron. Apparently they are KSU’s “rivals” but heck, my brother went there and my boyfriend goes there. Like the Tigers, if Kent’s not doing well I want to see Akron win.
… - Michigan. If you haven’t heard yet, Michigan sucks.
I’ll just say this; only one team’s fan has twice in four years prompted a visiting manager to pull his players off the field because the fans were throwing stuff (like baseballs and water bottles) onto the field during a playoff series.
That team was not the Red Sox.
(Which is to say, every team has asshole fans. The majority of fans are very pleasant and quiet people. You just don’t notice them.)
No, this is wrong. It should be,
-
Cubs
-
Everyone else
-
There’s another team in Chicago???
Cite please? I remember batteries and coins raining down in Fenway in October.
I know of many incidents were Yankees fans have been especially dickish, the Reggie Bar incident and a pocket knife actually got thrown at the field in the 90s.
I also recall hot dogs being thrown at the Yanks in KC. Mets and Philly fans have exchanged pleasantries a few times over the years. So as you said, fans can be jerks anywhere. (Possibly with the exception of St. Louis, they are almost too forgiving.)
Jim
That’s why I narrowed it to the last four year’s playoffs.
Actually, the worst on field fan incident is probably the two White Sox fans who beat up the Royals’ first base coach.
My point was that Red Sox fans don’t have a monopoly on assholishness. It just gets a little tiring hearing everyone harp on how much Sox fans suck.
I actually did encounter one asshole St. Louis fan, who started yelling at and threatening a Diamondbacks fan for, um, being a Diamondbacks fan at a game a few years back. Damn near got thrown out (and I wish he had). The immediate aftermath was a mass of Cards fans walking up to the D-Backs fan, apologizing and shaking his hand. You’re right; the vast majority of Cards fans are very nice.
Well, they do. Most teams have asshole fans. The Red Sox have more than their share.
I don’t think it’s “true” Red Sox fans who are so bad. It’s the people who are fans for show, not the quiet sufferers. It’s fashionable to be a Red Sox fan. It’s not fashionable to be, say, a Tampa Bay fan.
I’ll give you that. I think the whole “Red Sox” nation thing is an abomination that must die. I don’t want bandwagon jumpers; go root for your own team.
Still, it must be nice to know that TV is actually pulling for your team. When my team makes the Series, there are record low ratings.
That might be true but on the whole, Red Sox fans are as well behaved as a bunch of nuns at Mass when compared with Raider fans (is it true they give ticket discounts to newly released felons?) or Philly fans (why do you think they had a holding cell at the Vet?). Of course, they’re all amateurs when compared with your typical UK football hooligan.
That took me a minute. I kept thinking “I didn’t know Kentucky fans were that bad!”
I can pretty much agree with **Silenus **on every point…except two.
I’d swap numbers 1 and 100
Root for:
- Dallas Cowboys
- Any team whose win will best help the Dallas Cowboys
- San Diego Chargers
Other teams I sorta like:
Seattle Seahawks
New York Jets
Any team that hasn’t made a Super Bowl
Root against:
- Any team whose loss will best benefit the Dallas Cowboys
- Philadelphia Eagles
- Washington Redskins
- New York Giants
Teams I sorta don’t like:
Ravens
Pats
Atl
Oak
-
Atlanta Falcons. I live and die (mostly die) by how the Falcons do each week. Always have, always will. Yes, I know there are not a lot of Atlanta Falcons fans.
-
A tie: New Orleans Saints/Green Bay Packers. Even though the Saints are our division rivals, I still like them, and always have. Maybe because they lose almost as much as we do. And the Packers? C’mon, Lambeau Field is the Mecca of football. Also Brett Favre has always been one of my favorite players to watch.
–Everyone else–
- The Dallas Cowboys. Everyone hates the Cowboys. I suspect it’s because, back in the 70s (and again in the 90s), the Cowboys were always winning, and they were total dicks about it.
