I guess I never really understood an allegiance to a professional team given that they are private companies an all. Unless I work for a company or own stock in it I really don’t get that passionate about it…otherwise:
Dublin GAA. Born and raised on the Northside of Dublin in a big GAA family. Love the boys in blue. It’s even better because you have to be from Dublin to play for Dublin, now that’s real loyalty.
Irish soccer team. The boys in green are shite now but I have followed them all over the world.
Manchester United. Back when Ron Atkinson managed them they played some great football and had a lot of Irish players.
Greenbay Packers. They can never leave Greenbay. Like them just for that.
That’s why I gave AFC Wimbledon a mention, set up by fans. While the reciprocal ties between teams, locations and communities might have been lost in America, they’re strong in Europe.
When it comes to my sports preferences the salient fact is that I grew up in southern Ohio…
MLB: in the NL it’s easy: the Cincinnati Reds are at the top of the list and the Pittsburgh Pirates and LA Dodgers are at the bottom. I’m less attached to the AL; in childhood I rooted for the Royals and Red Sox, and now that I live in Seattle I politely support the Mariners.
NFL: Long ago I had an irrational love for the LA Rams, and in the years that counted (age 11-17) they were my favorites, closely followed by the Bengals (who, for better or worse, are my favorites now). Also, I have hated the Pittsburgh Steelers with great passion for over 30 years. I will always hate the Steelers. My hate for the Steelers motivates me to get up in the morning, go to work, wash the dishes, make car payments, etc. Hating the Steelers is as natural as breathing. When I see that blasted “Steelers march to the Super Bowl” thread every g*&d*&* year, I want to spit. Super Bowl XIV (Steelers 31, Rams 19), heartbreaking as it was, is the most exciting game I’ve ever seen.
NCAA football: I was born on the Ohio State campus so that’s who I root for, but strangely enough, when Michigan’s playing anyone else I’m fond of them too. I also root for Penn State because I went to school there, and for the UW Huskies because I live in Seattle.
LSU Tigers (undergrad alma mater). Love the royal purple and gold! I’ve got a closet full of purple. I write with purple-ink pens. My licence plate is “LSU_WIN”
Other SEC teams. I root for (most) of them. Special place in the heart for perennial losers such as Vandy, Kentucky, and Mississippi State.
Hard to root for South Carolina b/c of Spurrier. I *hate * Spurrier.
Alabama. The whole Saban thing, sure, but, hey, it’s 'Bama.
Florida Gators. I loathe the football Gators (funny, I have no animosity against the basketball team). When they end up “carrying the SEC pride” like last year in the BCS, the conflict makes me want to vomit.
Other conferences? Don’t much care. They pretty much fly below the radar of the SEC. Although it is good to see Notre Dame stinking it up this year. I started hating on them once they got their own TV network exclusive deal.
Not going to bother differentiating between sports…
UGA Bulldogs. WOOF-WOOF-WOOF!!! (All sports, though I bleed when the f-ball team loses. The final game I ever watched with my father was GA’s OT win over Alabama).
Tennessee Titans. I actually switched my allegiance from the Falcons this year, largely because of the whole Vick thing. It’s not because of the specific charges, it’s because he’s been a loose cannon for years and the entire organization didn’t give a shiite, then acted all Shocked and Awed that he would (gasp!) be involved in dog fighting. So now TN is “my” team.
Atlanta Braves. I’ve seen Maddux/Smoltz/Glavine/Avery pitch, Dale Murphy hit a home run… the Braves have been veddy veddy good to me.
Now for the hates:
Steve Spurrier. The man should retire, for the sake of all that’s good and decent in this world.
University of Tennessee fans. I don’t hate the Vols, but the UT sports department is way too good for their whiny, cry-baby, “let’s fire Pat Summitt” fanbase.
Hockey. I grew up in the South, so games played on ice have little appeal to me.
Ah, I think you mis-interpreted me. They only frustrate me because I love them so. Like when your kid does something stupid. It wouldn’t frustrate you if it was someone else’s kid who was a big loser, but you love your kid so much it pains you to see them do so bad.
Besides, don’t point the finger at me…clearly Chronos and jsgoddess are not from here, they are from Mars:
It’s like Red Sox “fans” who will root for the Yankees in the series because “They’re an American League team”. And vice-versa (I’m lookin’ at you, Giuliani).
I’ll admit that I was a Bartman away from rooting for the Yanks in '03, because I just couldn’t let the Cubs get theirs first. I was saved.
Manchester United (family team since the 50’s - don’t know why)
No preference in between
At the bottom, as expected, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Leeds, Newcastle
International Football
Scotland
Bulgaria
Argentina
Spain
Anyone that plays England (yes I am THAT petty)
Last place - England. Baseball
Red Sox
Cubs (because when we sat down 15 years ago and decided which baseball team to support the cubs was our second choice but we preferred the American League)
