For me the workout generally comes first. I exercise primarily for blood sugar control (I’m a type-2 diabetic), so I want to jump-start my pancreas before I eat anything. But it’s not an absolute, as the very first thing I do on rising is check my blood sugar. If it’s below 90 I eat first.
I workout at a gym Mon/Wed/Fri, and since it’s near my office that means it’s about 45 minutes from my house. I have two English muffins with peanut butter and a glass of OJ before I leave the house, otherwise my stomach will be growling just as I’m starting my workout. Then I finish the workout with a protein shake.
Tue/Thur/Sat I run first thing in the morning, no food first. I’m back from my run and cooled off in about an hour, and I eat then.
My wife runs a couple days a week but has to have a Clif bar or something small and non-sloshy (like, not a bowl of cereal or anything) before her run or she’ll run out of steam half way out.
I picked work out after eating, but it does depend on the situation.
If I’m doing a hard workout (cycling for 90 minutes), I have to eat something small before (usually a bar of some sort plus an electrolyte drink) or I’ll feel ill and lack energy. And afterwards I will feel REALLY ill.
If I’m just coming in to work and doing yoga or going on the elliptical for 30 minutes, I generally don’t eat anything first, just have water.
ETA: And I always eat something protein rich within about 20 minutes after most workouts too, generally a chocolate soy milk and hardboiled eggs or similar.
I didn’t vote because I almost never exercise in the morning. But on the rare occasions when I do, I exercise first. There was a week last year when I’d swim in the ocean 5 or 6 times before eating.
I try to work out every morning, but I generally always will work out first before eating, such as when I swim in the afternoon or if I have to work out at night.
I’ve read that it’s unhealthy for women to work out without eating beforehand, but men can at least do cardio without having to worry about eating. This has to do with men having higher testosterone levels. Please don’t ask me for any more details than that because I’m only reporting what I remember reading a while back, and I no longer remember the source.
FWIW, I’m a female, and I always eat before I work out, but just a granola bar. Then I eat after the workout too, or at least drink a protein shake.
I lie around in a near-drunk, hung-over stupor for several hours. Then, I crawl out of bed and retch into the toilet, as needed. Glass of water is next. Then, some sort of light breakfast, if I’m sure it will stay down. Followed by a post-breakfast, hang-over nap.
Does staggering to the bathroom and holding my head over the toilet count as exercise?
I seem to remember back in my ED days getting in shit from both my therapist and nutritionist for not eating something before working out in the morning. Something about having fuel in the furnace means you can work harder and get more benefit.
That said, they may have been saying that to convince me to eat more.
When I do work out in the morning (which isn’t every morning, so I didn’t vote), I work out first, then wait about an hour, then eat.
My body has made it very clear that it is not a fan of having food in it while I’m trying to exercise. Or right after exercise for that matter. It isn’t too fond of liquids, either, but I can get very, very small amounts down if I must. Even if I feel hungry before a workout, the feeling will go away while I’m exercising and stay away for a while after I’m finished. So I’ve just learned to wait until I’m done and eat then.
I work out in the morning and most of the day too if I can. I eat in the late afternoon. This is what has always worked for me. I never get hungry and don’t have a blood sugar problem that I know of. In an emergency, I can go days without eating. Thankfully, emergencies are rare.
The exercises I do every morning are really not a workout, but 30 to 35 minutes of stretching. I take my pills, then start the exercises, at the appropriate time, I start the water for my tea boiling and then steeping and it is ready about when I am and I have breakfast.
