Seriously, how is this guy at all still relevant? He is like a real-life troll, inserting his bad haircut into the public consciousness with the sole intention of “look at me”.
And here I am doing my fucking part to help him. Fuck that fucking fucker.
Say what you will about Rose, but when it came to playing baseball, nobody ever played the game harder. If being in the HOF is all about how you played the game…
That’s a hell of a statement, Reeder, and I respond with the greatest player that should have been:
Pete Reiser. He was carried off the field numerous times, once had Last Rites administered to him after smashing headfirst into a wall (non-padded, I might add) chasing a fly ball. Once he broke his ankle and told them to tape it up so he could get back into the game. With all of that AND World War II, he still had the chance in his career to hit .343 and lead the league in most offensive categories in 1941 while only playing in 137 games due to his aggressive style.
Pete Rose was a piker compared to this guy. But yeah, that notwithstanding, Rose should be in the Hall. In fact, had the Hall not pointedly passed a rule stating that banned ballplayers are not eligible after he was banned (the rule was passed in February 1991), he already would be.
Airman…We are just discussing Rose here my friend…but hell…there’s plenty of room in the HOF for both of them!
Sublight…I assume you are talking about the all star game where Rose ran over Fosse. What was Rose supposed to do? Better question…what would you have had him do?
I’m not a baseball fan. Still, I fail to see how betting should keep a person out of the Hall of Fame. Especially if this person is as good as everyone tells me Pete Rose was.
I won’t say Rose should not be admitted to the hall of fame, but betting is still a different issue than drugs. Betting undermines the integrity of the entire game. Drugs might improve the level of play, while betting can degrade the level of play.
I don’t really care if he makes the HOF or not, but how is this still so important after all this time. Plus, how is the fact that he has lied all these years, essentially dragging the names of Dowd, Giammatti and Kahn through the mud, the admission some sort of "cleansing’. The guy is a media whore.
A. Rose should be in the Hall of Fame as the outstanding record setting player he is.
B. He’s still a gigantic schmuck.
He denied betting on baseball for how many years, and then writes a book and does interviews where he says something like, “Yes I bet on baseball and it was my mistake for not coming clean until now.” – (to assure a better selling book, no doubt)
Dude, the mistake was betting on baseball in the first place. It’s the same old thing, he’s not sorry for what he did, he’s sorry he got caught.
How can someone who did something SO potentially destructive to the game possibly be honored for his contributions to the game? What he did could have undone everything that anyone who has ever been involved with the game has done, and destroyed baseball as we know it. If baseball players were allowed to wager on any game they want, baseball would be nothing more than professional wrestling.
Anyone who willingly endangers the game in such a manner is NOT worthy of recognition for his contributions to the game. And that’s exactly what the Hall of Fame is.
With the drug scandal that baseball keeps trying to shove under the rug and all those dubious offensive records, Rose’s offenses seem less blatant now.
He’s still a jerk, though.
Any entry into the Hall of Fame should be accompanied by a continued ban from active participation in MLB.
I think we should maintain the hard line on this one, fuck all this sentimental bullshit. He was banned for life, and it should stay that way.
Does he think that a decade plus of lying should be wiped away because of his weak admission?
If I was Selig I would say “apology accepted, your still banned for life, and yes, let’s move the fuck on”
Of course that won’t happen because in this day and age people aren’t responsible for their actions. I’m sure he’ll be reinstated soon enough, get some coaching job, and sail off into the sunset with a pile of money.
Joe Jackson was not voted into the Hall, rule or no rule, and he would have been a lock for it had he finished out a full career. I say Rose gets to stay on the outside looking in. Gambling on your own sport, on your own team, on your own game, is a cardinal sin.
And, look, he’s spent 15 years telling us that Giamatti, Dowd, and Vincent were nothing but liars. Fuck 'im. Read Boswell’s column in the Washington Post (survey reqested the first time you hit the site) for a much better written take on Rose.
Man! I love the SD. I had a big case of blahs today and then I read a thread were everybody’s piling shit on Pete Rose. It’s put a smile on my face that will last all day.
