Peter Bagge, cartoonist for Hate! and former journalist for the defunct Suck.com, has finally landed a respectable job at America’s finest newspaper, The Weekly World News.
He will be drawing the strip, “The Adventures of Bat Boy”. Further information is available at The Comic Journal’s message board.
Apparently, the strip Bagge draws is intended as fiction. The actual Bat Boy was unavailable for comment at the time of this writing.
Has anyone seen Bat Boy: The Musical? I saw a production in Memphis that was some of the best musical theater I’ve ever seen. Seriously. The music was really good.
Hold me, Bat Boy! Love me, Bat Boy! Help me make it through the night!
On a completely serious note, I went expecting a bizarre, camp over-the-top, experience akin to watching Killer Klowns From Outer Space, or a Troma film. There were moments of that. But there was also some truly excellent singing and acting. The show contains several parodies of current musical theater conventions, and some of specific shows (The Lion King number is magnificent.). But there’s also real pathos and characters who gain our sympathy without cheezy writing or cheap ploys.
Without spoiling things, one of the characters has been losing his hold on sanity throughout most of the play (the actor playing him did one of the most convincing portrayals of insanity I’ve ever seen.). He finally realizes that he can have what he’s always wanted. He just has to kill a few people. This revelation moves him to sing. The song’s title is Comfort And Joy.
Again, in complete seriousness, the folks who wrote Bat Boy The Musical deserve a few Tonys.
