Peter Brötzmann

I saw Peter Brötzmann in a trio format last night. I was only familiar with him via Last Exit and the “Lowlife” album with Bill Laswell, and frankly I didn’t give him these projects sufficient attention to appreciate them.

For a trio of sax, bass, and drums, this was loud (I wore earplugs). I’m still not sure I understood what he was doing. He was overblowing/playing harmonics a good deal of the time, and it was difficult to discern melody or even melodic intent. His technique was interesting, especially when he vocalized along with his playing.

Anybody have any strong feelings pro or con?

Sorry, I don’t know who he is. Sounds interesting though.

Well, I like him, but free jazz and noise isn’t for everyone.
Where’d you see him play?

A little place in Philly called the Cultural Education Center. Probably held 100 people tops. Very intimate.

I saw him, also in trio format, at the now-defunct Consolidated Works in Seattle a few years ago. “Loud” is indeed the best description, and I went and hid in the bar, where I could hear just fine. I enjoyed the music – I like long, intense pieces that take you out of the everyday and force you to meet their terms.

That’s an interesting take on the effects of unfamiliar music. I’m afraid I wasn’t up to the challenge.
