The group that plays at Mother’s has a xylophone. I don’t recall hearing one in Jazz.
Was that popular in the second half of the 1950’s?
Was it a Vibraphone?
It seems the use of Vibraphones and Xylophones goes back to the early days of jazz.
Lionel Hampton, great jazz artist comes to mind.
As does Modern Jazz Quartet.
