Peter Jackson might do The Hobbit

I feel the same way. I liked Jackson’s LotR, but the Hobbit is very different from LotR and I like it that way. It’s not that I wouldn’t like to see PJ’s take on it, but I’d really like to see someone else try it.

(However, I can see that he has a proven track record with the studios with LotR so maybe he’d get more freedom than another director. And I believe he is capaple of creating a Hobbit that is distinct from the LotR. So it might be a good thing.)

One thing though. I was going to agree with TWDuke about not shoehorning movie stars into a story in which they don’t beling. However, Arwen and Legolas belong in The Hobbit. Maybe they don’t belong on-screen, but Legolas and Arwen were alive during The Hobbit. Legolas was probably in the Elven Hall in Mirkwood looking pretty much the same age. Arwen might have been in Lorien, I’ll have to check on that, but she was alive and probably also looking basically the same.

So both characters could plausibly be seen in the background. (but I’d be pissed if they made a bigger appearnce than they deserve. I picture Legolas at Thranduil’s side and Arwen visible somewhere in Rivendell, but these really aren’t necessary.)

No. New Line is part of the AOL-Time-Warner empire, while UA is owned by MGM.

Brian Blessed for Beorn!

Totally Brian Blessed for Beorn! I love me some Brian Blessed

As for not wanting The Hobbit to look like LOTR, I don’t think that is a problem, as the LOTR films have not, imho, had only a single visual style. I love the Jackson has used different visual techniques to differeentiate between different areas of middle earth.

Aragorn would have been about 8 and at Rivendell at the time.

Kenneth Branagh as Bard.

Why am I hearing early 70s disco music in my head after reading the thread title?
*Oooooooooo

Ooo ooo ooo ooooooooo

Do it!

[disco music swelling up]

Do the Hobbit!*

According to the Encyclopedia of Arda, Aragorn was born in 1 March III 2931, while Bilbo set out in late April III 2941. So he’d have been ten years old at the time.

They could modify the massive amounts of facial prosthetics/makeup John Rhys Davies wore as Gimli and cast him as Gloin…

I agree it wouldn’t be incongruous to glimpse Orlando Bloom as Legolas at Thranduil’s side. I always wondered if Legolas fought at the Battle of Five Armies (I assume he did).

I think Arwen lived for a time at Lorien (Galadriel is her maternal grandmother) which is why Aragorn, who was living at Rivendell, didn’t meet here until he was 20 or so.

All the Dwarves would have to be tall actors…then they could be taller than whoever is cast as Bilbo, while CGI and forced perspective could be used when Gandalf is around.

GP! I hadn’t thought of that. So Arwen would be out most likely.

My mistake, I was doing the math in my head, with Aragorn’s age during Lord of the Rings, minus the 17 years between Bilbo’s departure and Frodo’s departure, minus another 50 years that Bilbo had the ring.

Ahh well, guess I was off somewhere.

AH! figured out what I did wrong. Bilbo had the ring for SIXTY years! He left for his journey at the same age that Frodo left for his. At the age of 50. Blah. I have brought shame to myself. :frowning:

Well, she could have come to visit from time to time. Peter Jackson has shown he doesn’t mind making even bigger changes (and involving the Arwen character as well-remember she wasn’t at the Ford of Bruienen in FOTR, either!).

I must confess, that was my initial response, too.

And it was not a visual I particularly needed.

If they were to do this film , I feel they would need to enhance the White Council / Dol Guldur plotline. This could give us some really cool scenes with Galadrial, Gandalf, Sauruman , Elrond and other Noldor. They would also have to delve into “Unfinished Tales” to establish Gandalf’s motivations for sending Bilblo on his adventure in the first place.

White Council scenes would be very, very cool!

Adding some stuff from “The Quest for Erebor” (UT) would work very well. The Blue Mountains here we come!
