Peter Jackson's Next Big Fantasy Film: TEMERAIRE

Icky. I think I’d prefer a movie version - the concept is fun, but the writing in the novel stinks. The characters are fairly standard one-dimensional bad fantasy cliches, and an unsurprising plot.

Serves me right. I should stick to my fiction comfort zone: quirky modern fiction by young male authors. For some reason, that’s all I feel like reading at the moment. Any and all recommendations appreciated!

Hmm… sounds like the one-trick-pony-ization of Peter Jackson is well underway, then.

Too bad.

I’d still like to see a screen adaptation of Larry Niven’s Ringworld. I know the book/series has it’s faults, but I still think it could make a good movie, and Jackson seems as good a guy as any to do it.

No more than Spielberg. His next film is The Lovely Bones, which is hardly in the same vein as LOTR or King Kong.

Woah…

I came across this series only two weeks ago - I’m reading the third book now - and so help me I thought, “They should make a movie of this. If Peter Jackson could do Lord of The Rings, Horatio Hornblower with dragons can’t be too hard.”

Do I trust Jackson to do it right? Well, I loved LOTR, mostly liked “King Kong”, and haven’t seen his earlier work. I’m not thrilled that he’s going the present-day-supernatural route (if I heard correctly about The Lovely Bones) but but I think Peter could handle the Napoleonic era.

This is sorta why I think Jackson won’t end up making The Hobbit, Smaug is really the only thing that would be new from LOTR. We’ve already seen Orcs, Trolls, Rivendale, elves, Dwarves, Giant Spiders, Hobbits, Wargs, Eagles, Gandalf, etc, etc.

It’s going to be the same movie as LOTR but less epic, which doesn’t seem like it would be a very interesting film for Jackson to make or people to see.

err…and the shapeshifter guy, which would also be pretty sweet to see on screen. But I really can’t think of anything else that would be “new” from the LOTR films

Oh, I don’t know. The interplay of Bilbo and all of the Dwarves would be well worth it. Think of Gimli to the Nth degree. I hope Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving and Andy Serkis all reappear. Oh, and a young Aragorn (Estel).

I dunno, from his handling of the ghosts in LOTR (i.e. cheesy green fakey ectoplasms,) and from what I hear about TLB, he would be perfect as a director.

That said there is a dearth of Napoleonic era fantasy so I will have to check out those books.

Maybe they could make the Scouring if they could get back all the actors.

I think that’s more of a problem then an advantage, honestly. 1 dwarf was entertaining and unique, twelve is going to be too many for the audience to keep track of. Even in the book, I only remember getting a sense for the characters of two or three of the (non-Thorne) dwarves.

Could have Orlando Bloom in the Hall of the Woodelves and at the Battle of the Five Armies as well. Would no doubt help draw in the young female audience.

Except for the part where the Wood Elves were, you know, the bad guys…

You think Orlando Bloom would be up for Legolam?
