PGA Championship thread

Nonsense. Phil’s got three majors, just the same as his contemporaries Ernie Els and Vijay Singh and Nick Price. There is no reason to think that if Tiger weren’t around they wouldn’t have more majors than Phil. He may have more game, but his head is messed up. He’s Greg Norman.

No, he’s not Greg Norman. He’s not managed anything so spectacular.

I live 10 miles from the course and we did not get rain.

if you live south of it, not surprising. The rain was coming across Michigan in a big comma, since there is a low pressure swirling up around the northern end of Lake Huron. As far as I could tell, the course was unluckily right at the bottom edge of the nasty stuff swinging across west to east.

By the way, to illustrate the jerkitude of Phil Mickleson, supposedly the nickname he gave himself is “BIG JAM”. That stands for “Boy I’m Good, Just Ask Me”.

Oh, please. Supposedly according to who??

Oh look, Justin Rose faded in the third round

Again.

Phil is going to need a miracle here. Ugh. He isn’t Tiger.

What the HELL happened to Rocco today??? An 85??? THIS is how you get Paul Azinger to pick you for the Ryder Cup???

Man, Lefty put himself in the mix, only to - you know the rest.
But a nice final 9 shaping up, with Padraig and Sergion going head-to-head, followed by Curtis.
A Tiger vacation might be just what some of the rest of these boys need.

According to several players on the tour, multiple members of a club here in Georgia, and a couple other people who work for a certain golf organization.

That being said, it’s FIG JAM.

I just reread LOUNE’s post, and I wanted to clarify that this is most certainly not a nickname he gave himself.

And now Padraig Harrington joins the list of guys with as many majors as Lefty. Anyone want to bet who’ll be the first to get four? I think Mickleson is done in the majors. He’s 38 and there are a whole lot of young golfers with serious game out there.

What a waste of talent. At least Greg Norman became an higely sucessful businessman.

As sometimes happens, this thread sent we on a Wikipedia tangent. I found out the amazing fact that in the 1970s, Jack Nicklaus finished in the top 10 in 35 of 40 majors.

Amazing.

On a different note, how about Ben Curtis? He’s not consistent from week to week, but this is the 3rd or 4th major he’s contended for, and he’s already got 3 total wins. I think he may stick around for a while.

I did some research on this subject (men’s majors only), and it turns out that a primo golfer’s chances of winning a major once they go past age 35 plummets pretty drastically, and only a meager handful of people have won them once they hit the big four-oh. The kinds of halfhearted fire-and-fall-back manuevers Mickelson has done in the majors over the past two years or so are thus to be expected. He’ll probably contend a few more times, and who knows he may have a real shot at one more title, but I wouldn’t bet on it. Look at Ernie Els & Jose Maria Olazabal-when’s the last time they had a real shot at a title?

Golfers BTW probably enjoy the latest peaks of any athletes in any sport; the most majors are won by players from ages 28-34; for baseball their heyday is 25-29, and tennis 20-25 (18-24 for women).

As for Sergio, once again he makes a mental mistake (slice into the water at 16), and a physical one (pulling his 4 footer at 17) at precisely the worst times.

Good stuff.

I wonder if the “new” golfer will win more past the age of 35. Since Tiger was one of the first guys to really start employing a strict training regimen, you might start seeing some of these guys contending more into their 40s. Of course, Phil doesn’t really fall into that category.

I’ll still say Phil has got a shot at the Masters. He’s more consistent there than any other major.

I’ll be surprised if Phil doesn’t win at least 2 more majors in his career. I’m no fan of his, but I don’t see any signs that his game is in decline. Remember, it’s only been a few years since he was that guy who might never win one major, and now he’s got 3. His level of talent is exceptional. His ability to close the deal is average.

Which was my point.
Still no one with an explanation for Rocco Mediate’s final round???
