This morning at 6:26 AM EST, while I was driving to work, my cell phone rang. The call was from 2348135591197. When I answered, all I heard was a person saying hello. I ended the call. That same number called back six more times in the next 90 minutes, once leaving a voice mail that consisted of background noise and the word hello.
Through a web search, I determined that 234 is the country code for Nigeria. Can anything good in the way of communications come from Nigeria?
Then, at 9:17, while I was away from my phone, I got a call from a different number in Nigeria.
I’m wondering if someone wrote my cell number on a bathroom wall in Nigeria.
Has anyone here had any experience with this or read about the problem and potential solutions?
I have answered a couple of the calls, and the only thing I can understand is the word “hello”. I am open to offers of riches, but I’m not hearing that.
I just got another call from a third Nigerian number.
You might want to check to see if you are getting charged for those calls or they are somehow using your phone (such as hacking 3-way calling) to get you to pay for the long distance calls.
Some phone companies have ways to block international calls. You may want to look into it.
Just lately I have been getting calls about a refund for a computer repair. $199.00
They are just the refund company. They pretend insufficient English so as to not be able to answer question I have about what computer, place that did the repairs, when, etc.
Those that want to go for it, send me your numbers & I’ll tell them you are interested, Bawahahaha
Shows to be coming from instate numbers, some ‘no longer in service’ & some from people I know with good numbers.
It just might be maybe a scam if I am paranoid enough to not take it at face value, what say you all? he he he
My guess would be that it’s scammers calling random numbers. Now that they know it’s a valid number that a human picked up, they have flagged it as active and will bombard you day and night.
I’d look into blocking international calls or getting your number changed.
For me it’s calls from the Philippines. Not at that density, but at various times over the last few years. No, I don’t know why. Maybe my number is really similar to some Pinoy expat’s.
Interesting. For the last 3 mornings my home phone has rung at 6:30 AM. after I’ve said, “Hello?” three or four times a computer sounding voice says, “good bye.”
Of course, then at 7:30, 8:30, and 10:00, Rachel calls, well, sometimes it’s Diane. :smack:
Yesterday, the first call came at 6:26 AM and the last one at 2:13 PM. There were 14 calls in all, from 4 different numbers, all 234 country code. I answered a few and never heard anything in English except hello. No more calls after 2:13 PM yesterday.
I called Verizon and asked if they could do anything to block these calls. They claim to have no way to block a country code. The guy said he could block the individual numbers for me, but could only enter 10 digits and my numbers were 13 digits. He wasn’t sure if entering the last 10 digits in the blocking list would be effective or not, so he didn’t do it.
sweetie pea - For me to make any attempt to give someone a good time, they are going to have to say a little more than hello.
I’ve started getting a bunch of calls at work from the 407 area code (Orlando area). Since I don’t know anyone there who’d have reason to call me, I ignore them or pick up the phone and quickly hang up. Yesterday they called, I picked up and said nothing. Silence ensued for about ten seconds, then I hung up. Either it’s a robo-call triggered by the sound of a human voice or they’re very stubborn.
A brief Google search turns up the likelihood that it’s a credit card scam.
