I got a curious call. I got one call from the auto dialer of an Arizona senator trying to get out votes. Immediately after I got one that caller id identified as “New York NY” The number was a 646 area code which is for Manhattan. I answered and heard only the echo of my own voice and immediately after a phone ringing as if I was making a call. I immediately hung up. Is this a new phone hijack method? I couldn’t find anything similar on Snopes.
It was probably just another autodialer, making a comforting noise while it connected you to an agent.
The only phone hijack I’ve heard of has to do with hacking into the answering machine service that you lease from the phone company (built in, no machine in your home). I don’t remember the details but if your password is easy to guess then someone can somehow get access to make calls on your line.
I don’t think it’s possible to call someone, have them answer, then force a call through at their expense. But who knows.
